I am running Vista Ultimate (32 bit)on a well endowed Dell XPS system with 6 GB of ram. My question is "to or not to" download SP2 and install it. Or just leave well enough alone. Do the positives outweigh the negatives ? Bottom line do you think it is a must to do. The puter is running well and I don't want to screw anything up. Any suggestions for minimizing downloading problems or issues ?

    Thanks Much,
    Schaeffdog

    Hi

I never had any issues on 4 of my home PCs with Vista Sp2 at all, but we can never account for all PC setups and the software they have installed that "could" potentially cause issue with an update, personally I would backup your PC and give it a go.

But to minimize any issues I would not use Windows Update, but download the complete package and run it that way with your AV disabled. Full SP2 HERE

It really is no big deal at all, and best got on with. My Vista system has been beautifully stable post SP2, so much so I can't see any point in upgrading to Win 7.

6GB is wasted on a 32 bit system btw. At best the OS can use about 3.5GB

Thanks well stated...one of my fears was one of my friends lost his Norton Internet Security during the process. Glad to hear it was simple and worked for you. I also feel the same about upgrading to Win 7 as you do.

    Thanks, Schaeffdog

I can't speak for the others, but before I carny out any significant change to my computers I always take an image of the system partition and store it on a network or external drive. That way there really isn't any need to worry about what might happen if it misfires for any reason, as you can put it back to how it was in no time at all.

I use Acronis for this, and have found it completely reliable, but there are other solutions too.
