Vista suddenly stoppped reconizing USB devices

A day ago I had my pc randomly shut down on me and when I booted it back up my USB mouse no longer worked. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and a message balloon pops up saying windows dose not recognize this device. So I tried all of my ports and another usb mouse with no success with the exception of an old junky PS/2 mouse. However my external hard drive and my flash drive still worked fine on every port. After some web searching for solutions, I went to the device manager and uninstalled every thing under universal serial bus controllers then shut down unplugged every usb booted back up and downloaded and installed the mouse driver I still no luck. Next I tried to do a system restore but after it restarted an error message popped up saying that the system restore was unsuccessful because something was wrong with the restore point. After trying a different restore point with the same result, the problem worsened by vista no longer recognizing both may external and flash drives.

Now my gut feeling is telling me that even though my anti-virus scan did not find anything, that this situation reeks of virus. But I figured I ask for help here before I jump to any conclusions and have the malware removal forum help me track down something that was never there in the first place. So any advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
