ACER Laptop (5570Z) which came with Vista Home Premium installed.
I upgraded hehe...to XP Pro SATA edition SP3 since my hdd was SATA this was the only OS I could get that would install the drivers to make my hdd work.
I downloaded all the XP drivers from Acers website before I made the change. They all worked except for:
No modem now (although I did find the driver for my wireless card and so I can get onto the internet using wireless only) but do want the land modem so I can download using the phone line and not trust to downloading over the air waves.
I tried all their modem drivers but, still no modem is even listed now in Device Manager or in Control Panel either.

Also I have a realtek hd audio but it cant start because the error says it is not configured correctly. Naturally I have no idea how to configure it since everything is greyed out anyway in Sounds in Control panel. I have the yellow exclamation marks next to: Audio Device on High definition audio Bus under the "Sound, Video and Game controllers" in Device manager.

I also have the yellow exclamation mark next to:Modem device on High definition Audio Bus under the "Other Devices" in Device manager.

Before now, I couldnt get my pc to accept and recognize and audio device, but I figured out how to install one using the Add Hardware utility. I had a choice of 3 to chose from (all Reatek of course since thats what Everest said I had before I changed to XP Pro).

Now my pc has it and it appears to be working as thats what it says in Properties; This device is working properly.

But when I go into sounds in Control Panel: Everything is greyed out indicating that I dont have any audio device at all installed. And when I try to install drivers for it: I get the message I have to insert the Realtek CD with the driver on it into my pc. I never had a Realtek cd to begin with. I have spent 2 weeks and just now finally got my audio device to be recognized by my pc. But now: in Control Panel in Sounds. In the Hardware Tab it says:
This device is not configured correctly (Code 1). So thats where I'm at now.
No land modem and this configuration problem on my audio. The location of the audio is:65535 [Internal High Definition Bus].
I sure hope someone can help me with this as I'm rapidly losing my hair..lol. I got my password today from Microsoft and the download link to download the:
Universal Audio Architecture: as I read in this forum earlier or some other forum about that being needed. I have no idea if this is what is causing my problem by not having this UAA installed (its version 1.0a). I dont even know how to tell if I have a UAA already installed or not since I only read about it about 3 in the morning. But I can download it now (wirelessly since my land modem doesnt exist yet) Since is such a big file, I doubt I will be able to get it all downloaded over the airwaves before I lose the connection(hence the reason I want my land modem for this purpose).
The driver I downloaded for my audio is WDM-192. This is supposed to be the specific driver for my realtek that I need. I have already tried to install it but it hasnt fixed my problem. I have tried over 6 drivers that came closest to matching my realtek high definiton audio device, but no luck. Maybe now my driver the WDM-192 is installed and its just that this configuration thing is all that needs to be resolved, or maybe that UAA needs to be installed also. MS said that I should talk to one of their techs before installing it to make sure it would not screw up my pc because they had not done the testing on it to verify its safety to use in my pc.
Thank you anyone who can help...:)

Many newer modems are tied into the audio chip, and that's probably why the modem isn't in the device manager. There's tons of threads here at Major Geeks about people having Vista > XP problems with sound. I'd think a forum search should provide enough info to get you fixed up. And, yes. This is all tied into the UAA. That's been causing nightmarish scenarios for many, many people. Major Geek member musksnipe has become something of an expert in all things UAA but I haven't seen many recent posts from him. Hopefully he'll come along and straighten this out if a forum search doesn't supply the help you need.

    BTW- there's a few things I don't understand:
XP Pro SATA edition??? I've never heard of any such thing as being released by Microsoft, but whatever works, I guess.
:confused "...not trust to downloading over the air waves..." You'd rather have dismal speeds? I'm not sure what you mean by 'trust'. When the word 'trust' is used with internet, it usually refers to security. Connecting wirelessly and downloading from a wireless router is very, very safe and secure. If you're referring to the chance that a wireless download might be corrupted somehow by travel through the air, I can tell you that I spent about 8 months using a wireless connection exclusively to download all sorts of stuff including music and video clips, and never, not once, was anything corrupted, nor was I ever compromised in the way of security. I understand if you're on the road alot, and wireless hot spots or available DSL/broadband plug in spots can be hard to find; being able to use dial-up internet in this case would make sense, but only if it was used when nothing else was available. Using dial-up when a hi-speed 802.11g 54mbps wifi connection is available makes absolutely no sense, and would be a massive waste of time. OOOPS! I got carried away. I tend to do that, sorry, nothing personal ;)

I forgot to mention the SATA edition was an OS created by my friend using my XP OS cd because I wanted to use XP on my laptop instead of VISTA. He had to slipstream the drivers for a SATA hdd since my XP cd was made for a regular ide hdd and not sata.

I dont believe this. For several days now I have been getting the New Hardware found in my Taskbar. As usual I tried to let it update the drivers which never worked since I have not been able to get working drivers for this anyway let alone the audio device itself. I copied the UAA onto my pc last night to my desktop but did not install it for 2 reasons:
    1. The instructions were like Greek to me(it wasnt a simple click to install program) but was 4 system files of some sort
    2. The read me said it was for XP SP2 (my XP has SP3) so that was another reason I did not even try to install it thru registry etc etc.

Today I had the Speaker icon in my Taskbar for the very first time and in Control Panel/Sounds, the whole thing was not greyed out anymore. I can actully make settings changes now. I dont understand why this all seems to have corrected itself on its own.
I did try for 2 weeks to install the drivers (WDM_R192 from Realtek) but they never worked. Now today it appears I have audio.
Can anyone explain how this got to working on its own when all I did was copy the UAA to my desktop but never installed it?

That sounds like magic to me. LOL
I have always suggested the actual download from another site (which seems not to be working lately) , so I am not sure how the MS request works.
It's possible what you downloaded from MS acted like a magnet (remote assistance sort of thing) to pull the update for you and it installed overnight or somehow you did install it and it took hold after shutting down and rebooting.
I always recommend a reboot after a driver install and that is what it takes to get it to take hold sometimes. Lots of folks install a driver, say it doesn't work, then report back the next day that it does work.

I didnt even try to install it so that cant have been it. I relooked at them again today and they are all called "Self Extracting Cabinet MicrosoftCorp". But they surely dont have an exe. extension. I didnt know about that aspect of drivers not taking effect until later. I always did reboot everytime I loaded and removed the drivers hopeing to find a driver that would work. But for the last 3 days, when this found New Hardware message started popping up and it would say"
Your hardware has been installed but might not work properly". And when I would look under Properties at it it would say" This device is not Configured Correctly". So for the first weeks I cant even get the Audio device to be recognized let alone to get it to install. And now it gets installed but isnt configured correctly. And I didnt do anything to configure it either, I dont know how or where to find any settings to configure it to. lol
