i am feel kinda regretful to hear this because i'm using the same thing. but hey, the problem might not be caused by the VTP, since it only modifies the visual part of your system. Problems like themes getting screwed up or icons not showing up can be from it.
what did it say when you tried to install the ad-aware 2007?

I use VTP,for 1year and I've never have problems with this soft.Anyway use CCleaner and repair everything in "issues",run cleaner to delete any unwanted files.Try to reinstal programs that give you trouble.

i uninstalled VTP for extra performance in my games (cant really afford good stuff) and i know that VTP is causing the problem because everything was fine before i installed, and while i had and after unintall things were somewhat messed up :/ and the ad-aware 2007 think says fatal error in the message box and says premature cancellation for the title. i have and love ccleaner. ccleaner can not find anything i have tried multiple programs to get rid of bad keys left behind and checked the application data folder for stuff too. nothing.

i have nothing against VTP but i am not gonna use it again. ill just go for vista if i want the look.

When system files are messed up, it can be useful to use -
start, run type in sfc /scannow
And this will replace corrupted/faulty Windows protected files, - can take an hour, but useful, quicker than reinstalling everything.

I'm biased against System File Checker, but thats a different discussion for another time. I was under the impression that the only files modified by VTP were uxtheme.dll and ntoskrnl.exe.

Those won't cause performance issues. They may cause theme problems, booting problems, or STOP errors but other than that...nothing like whats being described here.

I just think worrying about VTP is barking up the wrong tree. I would think that the first step to fixing this would be to give the exact errors, word for word. "Messed" up, technical term it being, is fairly vague.

ok ill explain the best i can. i do not have ad-aware installed atm because i wanted beta which would encounter a "fatal error" ccleaner works fine and never finds any keys wrong. windows media player says "an internal application error has occurred" lets clarify this before i say the next 1. i have a computer that is 110% CLEAN OF SPYWARE, VIRUSES, TROJANS, ADWARE, AND ROOTKITS! ok... the next problem is IE 7 (im using Firefox right now btw) 1. it takes extremely long to load. (i don't have any addons) 2. i cannot click on links whatsoever in IE7 same with opera. another issue is when i click on icons on my desktop. (i think it may be the mouse) the programs do not respond about 3/4 of the time when clicked. (don't load no matter how long i wait) and the mouse settings are real high. icons r still VTP style (im ok with that, and finally the windows xp logo at startup and shutdown are close to the right of the screen while the text is centered.

cant think of any more atm so ill post when i find more.

thats about it, dosnt sound like much but in day to day use it is ANNOYING!!!

    Thanks for all the posting!!!

Try the steps below for the Windows Media Player issue.

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Click Start, and then click Run.
    5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK.
    6. Click OK.

See if that gets it to working.

dude... thanks a ton! it works now :) thanks!!!!! ill still see about the other problems!! :clap

oh ardy i cant get the screen to show up. when i reformatted it said it made 2 windows xp boots (didnt really) and made me wait. i did not want to wait so i made them have no time on them, so i cant go into safe mode either. i donot remember how i did this but im sure it will work in safe mode.

goran i have really reallllllly crappy components. dont laugh :(
intel celeron 2.4 gh processor (single core)
    ati radeon 9250 pci card
    generic 80 gig HD
    dell moterboard (dimension 3000)
2 512 mb kingston ram sticks
    soundmax sound card
windows xp home (sp 2 fully updated)
no idea about other specs you might want

Well, this is the next best thing to safe mode, please give it a shot and see if it clears up the problem. Of course, its just a troubleshooting step, not a solution.

Wouldn't F8 work on yours, to get to startup options ?

I posted about VTP6 some time ago and for whatever reason the post was removed without any explanation (maybe the mods thought i was promoting it)
i had the same problem it ran great but i now forget the reason i wanted to uninstall i used the process to uninstall but it left a lot of junk behind.

i ran every cleaner i could find and eventually got clean but it took ages to do
