Vista Update problem

This is for a friend who is having a MAJOR headache with Updating Vista SP2, the problem just started a couple of days ago, he has "Auto Updates" set to "Notify only, do not download or install", when the update icon appears in the Taskbar and he clicks on it, it then takes him to "Windows Update", when he clicks on "check for Updates" he gets an error message "Windows Update error 80070002", Google has turned up many possible solutions but NOTHING solved the problem, he has contacted M$ and they gave him a list of things to try, again NOTHING solved the problem, when he looks in the Control Panel - Program info - checks the box for "updates installed" - nothing appears, no SP's, NOTHING, so he can't even uninstall anything because he can't find any updates -

In "My Computer" - Properties - it does show that SP2 is installed

Anybody have an idea ????

hehehe is it a legit copy of vista? Sounds like it is not passing the activation check 100% to download updates due to a bad activation crack.

 

It's not an issue of legitimacy. Now when you said you searched google you came up with nothing that worked? I had the same exact issue and what fixes most update issues is deleting the files windows uses to identify updates and such. Here is a web page from microsoft that describes how to do this, and when you do it follow all steps, which includes stopping the windows update service.
