Running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit on my Dell PC.

Nothing but trouble...Last fall I was here & ended up doing a clean re-install of Vista after all the scans. Slow PC, lockups, very slow restarts & shut downs, Outlook lockups.

I downloaded 'Abexo Free Registry Cleaner 1.5' in July & noticed increasing slow & lock-ups. I was unable to do a System Restore bcos I waited to long & backup for Reg entries says 'not all data written to registry...some keys are open by system or other processes'. Tried to restore it in Safe Mode, but same message.

I followed all your procedures throughout the yr - Malware Rmvl Guide, Vista Clng Proc & How to Protect Yourself. Ran all the scans, but I wasn't able to run Rootrepeal this time & I did disable FW & AS/AV. Attached all my logs below to see if u can find something before i switch over to Windows 7. I'm constantly pulling my hair out!

Maybe there is something else we can try next if u don't see anything. I appreciate all your advice & asssitance!
    Thank you,
    Lori

Your logs are clean. However, you are probably having slow issues due to a lack of RAM. 1gig is barely enough to run Vista and not enough to run Win7.

    Code:
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory 0.99 GB
    Available Physical Memory 340 MB
I suggest you look into double or tripling your RAM.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Tim,
Thank you for ckg everything out and for your suggestion. Where is the best place to buy more RAM for a Dell Dimension E520? Dell has it for (2) 1GB Dell Certified DDR@ Desktop Memory Module Kit $65.99 plus s/h & tax. Would local Office Depot or Best Buy be a good place?

How hard would it be to change over to Win7? I have been having so many problems with Vista...going crazy. What are the pros and cons?

My husband has XP Prof on his laptop and it runs great!

I appreciate all of your assistance.
    Lori

You could check prices at crucial.com for the RAM ( it will also tell you how much RAM your system can handle). As to doing an upgrade, it should be fairly simple to do. But you might want to give Vista a chance once you upgrade your memory.
