You sure you want my 'third party' opinion? Not everyone likes what I have to say.

    Check my blog.

Bells and whistles for the most part. Aesthetically pleasing if you have the power for it, some better security features off the bat...

If you can get it cheap or have the option to get it instead of XP on a new machine, no harm done. IMO, not worth the upgrade right now unless price is no matter to you. Most, if not all the features in Vista can be done in XP with 3rd party applications. I've used Vista on friends machines many times and am in no rush to change from XP, and like many others, i'm dual booting with XP and Kubuntu Linux (Ubuntu with KDE).

Thats my opinion, but also seems to be the general consensus from the articles and opinions i've seen.

one of the cool things vista does that xp doesn't is it tells you that when your hard drives are about to fail, and you don't even have to have smart enabled in the bios- learned this from personal experience.

call me weird, I rather hear it from the BIOS than the OS ;)

For most stuff, Vista is much better than XP. It seems slower for Games and Video Encoding/Rendering, but other than that, it is much more stable.

Just make sure you have 2GB of RAM. It tends to precache programs that it thinks you might run, so it is kinda slow on 1GB.
