Vista - "wermgr.exe" at 50% CPU

I think the title sums it up... Vista Home Premium - no SP - the file wermgr.exe is using up to 50% CPU at all times, and rarely dips below 35%. wer = Windows Error Rreporting.It's not listed in the Windows task manager and I had to use Sysinternals Process Explorer to find out what was going on. My research tells me that this is fairly common, and disabling the error reporting feature does nothing, and that the problem is usually caused by an Office2007 component, and that running the built-in Office Diagnostic will fix it.... not so. I ran the tool, and it reported "No problems found". Having the cpu at a constant 50% is (obviously) making the laptop run VERY slow..... any ideas? thoughts? suggestions?

(BTW - I think I'll install SP1 right now and see if that works - installing SP1 has worked wonders in the past with Vista problems)

Someone reported he opened Outlook and ran the Office Diagnostics; I did read you ran it but maybe if you run it from Outlook, it acts differently? Crossing my fingers.

If that does nothing, the workaround is to run Process Explorer and kill the process every time at start up or reboot. It's crude but at least you get the CPU back on your side.

I found another that is less cludgy than the workaround I mentioned above.
You can "unschedule" it from running apparently, if you use autoruns

Thanks. I've tried killing the process with the Vista task manager and it doesn't do anything. I click 'End process' or 'End process tree' and it has NO effect. wermgr.exe simply stays there and keeps running. I'll take a look at the link provided and see if that works. Thanks again plodr!

Hi

Did you install SP1 or SP2 yet to see if they clear this up?

Also run PC in Safe Mode, and does it happen still? plus check Event Viewer for any faults as an application generally is causing this, would also turn off any AntiVirus component that it tied into Office, especially Nortons Office Plugin.

In Normal Mode use msconfig to disable all startups and see if ok with no added startups if OK then enable one at a time until culprit found.

Could also if they PC seems to be running ok and the above or any other steps you take dont find the cause turn off Error Reporting, steps here >>>> Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions > Change settings > Advanced settings until a solution is found.

Well, I had nightmarish experiences trying to install SP1 from a CD I burned awhile ago... it worked fine on other PCs... anyway.... I downloaded the SP1 .exe from Microsoft, and I get the error attached below right at the start of the install. On a bright note, the wermgr.exe using up to 50% CPU has been fixed. I did run the Office diagnostic tool again, and it seems to have fixed the problem, even though it reported "no problems found". So now I'm dealing with an SP1 install error!!!!!!!

Find out if the user ever installed a beta version of Vista.

...answer from MS development. If you are using a version of Vista
that was from a beta or release candidate and then upgraded to the production
release, SP1 will not install. SP1 will only install on Vista version that
was released to manufacturing. Only solution is to reinstall Vista using a
"real" release.
