Have been using Vista for 6 months with no major problems. However, recently, a strange situation has arisen regarding Windows Update. System is set to download and update automatically.

Every day, the icon in the systray reflects an 'important' update needs installing (Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). Apparently, Windows uses this same name for many updates. I notice this same name numerous times when I review history.

Anyway.... when I review history, it reflects that the update was installed properly (at 2am that day as scheduled). When I 'clcik' on install, it installs again... successfully. However, the icon indicating I need to install remains in my systray.

    How do I remove it??

    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. After uninstalling, rebooting and than re-installing the update (along with today's updates) that particular update still shows as waiting to be installed..... but reviewing the history log shows I did install it again. Actually, the history log shows I have installed it several times this year <grin>.

    Hi

Try the info in this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181

Also could try re regsitering the files dll and at times this helps remove these messages, so in the Start Search Box type CMD and then in the list right click CMD and choose "Run as Administrator" then in the CMD box past this C:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml4.dll and hit enter, if iy says its sucessfully registered then goto Win Update again.

If you have Spybot S&D installed disable it first before trying to register the file as its known to by default block registry changes.

Thanks for your help. After following your suggestions and following several links, I 'think' every went properly. I also ended up uninstalling and reinstalling MSXML 4.0 SP2 KB941833.... a prior update. The only difference is the way these two updates are now displayed in the add/remove folder. They previously displayed as 'Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KBxxxxxx).' They now display as 'MSXML 4.0 SP2 KBxxxxx." Can I assume they are one in the same? Windows Update no longer reflects they need to be installed and are reflected as being successfully installed in the history log.

There was an additional 'Optional' update (Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family) I tried installing. It failed so I went to the Intel website and downloaded the update manually. After the install program ran for 10 to 15 minutes it failed with the following error message.... 'An unknown error has occurred - Setup will exit.' It allowed me to re-try the installation, but again failed with the same error after 10-15 minutes. Any suggestions?

I have an Acer 5215-2153 that reflects the 'Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family' in Device Manger under 'Display Adapters."

    Thanks

    Hi

Yes if the KBxxxxx numbers are the same they are the same files, here are the ones installed on my PC.

as for the chipset, I would if you have no yellow ! marks in Device Manager ( to view Device Manager, click Start > type in the Start Search box Device Manager and hit enter ) then I would leave well alone as there should be no major reason to update this one.

    Thanks again.

OK... I'll forget about the chipset update. My system only shows the updates KB941833 and KB936181.... and the SIZE of KB936181 is only 34KB
