A relative has asked for some help regarding a connection issue with a new laptop. It worked fine on a wireless account here in Vancouver, but once she got to a more remote location up north, the wireless will not connect. She has found out that others are having the same problem, and this page suggests a fix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

Does that sound like a good idea? She is not a registry editing type, but with a printout of the instructions and a system restore point at the ready, would it be worth a try?

Another suggestion found online was to disable the "User Account Control".

Does that sound right? If so, where is it?

Thanks in advance for any help. I don't have access too often right now(library only) so it might be a day or two before I get back on. I'll call her and tell her to check this thread tomorrow, though.

User Account Control is found in control panel / user accounts and family safety / user accounts. with a restore point ready i would give it a try.

You can not fix a computer problem when the only information that you have is the it work in one place and it does not work in another.

If all the people that having the trouble are Vista users and they have to correct logon credentials it might be related to the fix posted above.

Otherwise, more information is needed in order to try to resolve such an issue.

    Hi all,

I am the relative MrPewty is refering to. I know very little about computers so I don't know if I am providing the right kind of information but here goes...

I recently moved to a small town, from a city and started getting wireless internet from a hotspot outside my apartment. They use a router and a log-in page and I have a username and password. For the first few days it worked fine, I would connect and the icon on the right of the taskbar said "Access: Local and Internet" and had a globe symbol. I then go into internet explorer and it takes me to a login page, after loging in I was able to use the internet. It was usually at 3 bars.

One night I connected to the network but then when I opened internet explorer it didn't go to the login page, it just came up with a typical error you would see if you weren't connected at all. The icon on the taskbar didn't say local and internet anymore, it said "Access: Local only". I can connect to the network but the connection with the internet will not work. I've spoken to the woman at the hotspot and the internet is working perfectly there. That is where I am now, connecting via a wire to the internet at the hotspot, rather than via a router.

When I opened internet explorer when the internet was working it said on the bottom bar: "connecting to" and then the IP address. Now it just says connecting to www.google.ca and then comes up with the error page.

I don't think I have done anything between the time it worked and the time it stopped working. I have seen that many people have this problem with Vista and I tried a couple solutions (unchecking the IPv6 and now I tried disabling User Account Control) but those haven't fixed the problem. When I try to repair it with diagnose and repair, it says there may be a problem with the DNS server.

After I disabled the user account control and restarted, the list of networks came up with the usual network that I connect to but instead of saying next to it, what sort of security it has and the number of bars, it said: "The capability of your network adapter does not match the requirements of this network". Then I refreshed the available networks page and it came up as normal again. I can connect to the network itself, just not the internet. Maybe it is something related to the router. I really don't know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
