visual basic 6.0 datagrid

uhm i set the allowupdate and allowaddnew properties of the datagrid to "true"..how can i make sure that at least one record is entered before a user can process his data?.. i tried this code (below) but it doesn't work..

if AdoPurchase.recordset.fields(0).value = "" then
msgbox "Please input a value first"
elseif AdoPurchase.recordset.fields(1).value = "" then
msgbox "Please input a value first"

AdoPurchase.recordset.update
