i have just reformatted and reinstalled Windows. When i reinstalled Visual Studio .NET 2003 it made me install IIS (which it did before). However, when i try to create a new Web Application i get a message box that says:

"The web Server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web project located at the following URL: 'http://localhost/WebApplication1' , 'HTTP/1.0 500 Server Error'. "

When i go to IIS it shows my service as running, what else do i need
to check? There are no messages pertaining to this problem in Event Viewer...

when you install the .NET framework from visual studio, It puts in the .NET user but does not set permissions for it. Make sure the permissions are set properly for the .NET user for the web roots in which your project is running.

Ok, thank-you. :) i don't think i have taken that class yet, though. Could you elaborate a little, please? My knowledge is a bit limited at this moment. i am moderately familiar with IIS and setting permissions (from my SQL server course) and things like that.

right click on the folder that holds the project, choose security tab.. find the ASP.NET user and make sure you check the box that says "modify" rights.

cool, thanks, ill try that when i get home.
i had added asp.net to the admin group (which i have been told is bad) and i added it to the users for my Visual studio projects folder, but i think you are referrring to the inetpub/wwwroot folder?

yes. but remember that inetpub/wwwroot is NOT necessarily your webroot. You can make any folder a root of a web. So if you have problems running .NET apps, make sure that user is added to the security of that folder.

Here is something interesting about my problem. i am going thru the settings applied to the system i use at school, to see if i can figure out where the problem is. One thing i have noticed is that when i right click my folders at home, then select either "sharing and security" or "properties" i get a form with 4 tabs, but at school there are 5 tabs. The tab i am missing at home is the "security" tab, which is the one that allows me to actually add a specific user, as opposed to just marking the folder as shared. Could this mean that i am not actually assigning the proper permissions like i thought i was? Why would this difference exist? Both systems are WinXP Pro with all updates and service packs. The only difference that i know of is that the one at school is on a network.

Is there something i need to set up to get the extra folder option?

    ----------------------------------------------

    Things i have tried:

i googled the error message andf got a bajillion possible fixes, most of which are on message boards and followed up by a "THX Dude! that's what it needed!" by the original poster. None of these things have worked for me.

    -reinstalling in a different order
-changing the user to SYSTEM in the machine.config file
-checking the "bypass proxy" checkbox in internet options (i dont even have a proxy server)
-checking, unchecking, changing any number of different options in the home directory tab of the website properties window in IIS
-punching my computer in the face

open up windows explorer. Choose view, folder options.. scroll to bottom and uncheck "use simple file sharing". This will give you your security tab.

Well, i added the ASPNET user to my "Documents and Settings", "InetPub", and "Visual Studio Projects" folders. First, though, i restored my system to the point just after i had installed Visual Studio, because of all the other changes i had made and unchecked the box in the folder/view window to get the security tab. Still no luck. i just don't know what else to try. unfortunately i am just learning this and so i don't understand a lot of it.
