If you want to be able to run XP in VMware Player you need an XP installation disk and a licence key. XP Mode however has to be installed directly into Win 7. Read THIS

I originally installed virtual pc and xp mode into my win 7 pc but when i clicked on the icon to run my only software programme that would not run after installing win 7 from xp i received a message,of which i cant remember now to allow me to use my software.

Do you advise i install xp mode and virtual pc again ?

If you have both VMware Player and XP Mode installed in Win 7 then You should remove one or the other. If you don't have XP installation media then remove VMware. If XP Mode still gives errors then yes, try removing it and reinstalling. If you still get errors after reinstalling then you will need to provide us with details.

    Ok
I will remove files and start from scratch.
I will then install windows virtual mach & Xp mode.

At what point do i use my win 7 disc.
I installed these before and had to select the globe bottom left of screen then select software etc.
Then xp loaded onto my win 7 screen.
I never used win 7 cd at all so a bit confused.

I can't see any reason why you would be asked to insert your Win 7 disk though I don't use XP Mode myself so can't be entirely sure. VMware is far superior but you do have to have installation media for whatever OS you want to install.

    ok
What i need is something that will allow me to run 1 software programme that i must be able to use for my work.

I am happy to use Vmware but i could not see how to import the xp mode.
This was what i read in a forum etc.
You then told me to delete one or the other.

Can i just install and use the Vmware software to run my software which works perfect on xp but win 7 is a different situation.

I do have the win 7 disc and license.

Either way what ever programme i need to use to run this is fine.
I agree that Vmware looks better.

    Please advise.

VMware cannot run any software itself, it is just an empty computer implemented entirely in software and can't do anything until, like any computer, it has an operating system installed. To install XP in this 'virtual machine' you need an XP installation disk and a product key, just as you would with any other computer. But XP Mode doesn't qualify as an installation disk, you cannot use it in VMware.

By following the guidance in the link I gave you XP Mode can be installed directly into Win 7 Pro or higher and once it is installed you can then go on to install in XP whatever software you need. For that you must of course have the appropriate installation media.

    Hope that helps

    Ok
    I undestand.
I did read that once Vmware is installed you can import the xp mode.
    So lets forget about this.

I will use Vmware and look for me old xp disc.

    Ok
    Today i installed Vmware player.
Put the disc into the drive and it started to install via the Vmware.
License box popped up and i entered the 25 digit code.
So far into the set up of xp etc i get another box pop up asking for the 25 digit code but this time when i enter it i am told "This product Id that you have entered is not valid"
I am now unable to continue.

Can you tell us anything about this XP CD you are using? What does it say on the label? If it's a genuine Windows installation disk you might be able to resolve this by calling Microsoft and explaining. The message is odd though, referring to the product id rather than the product key.

What version of XP did you have before, Home Premium? The thing is that these product keys only work providing the version you are installing is the same as the version the key relates to. If you previously had XP Professional then it would be worthwhile calling Microsoft, but not otherwise.

  14. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

    I had XP professional SP3

This disc i purchased shows XP.
I did phone microsoft who told me the key is say registered to me and have only been activated once before.
Apart from that she did not say much else.

I guess it's that the disk isn't a regular retail installation disk. Did you actually request a new key? As your key has only ever been used once I would have expected them to be able to help.

What a pity you binned your original disk :cry

The disc i am using shows Pid=55274270 in the i386 folder, does this help you ?

No i did not request a new key.

Can't help with the Pid but try calling again. Depends on who you get of course but they are only trying to prevent piracy so I can only wish you good luck. Do let me know the outcome please :)

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/m.whybrow/The fake Windows XP problemFrame1Source1.htm

Take a look at this please.
Just down from the top is this...
I decided to investigate the COA key number and by Googling, found many references to the file SETUPP.INI which resides in the i386 directory of the XP CD, so I decided to compare what was on this CD and compare it to my original CD:

    eBay copy SETUPP.INI file:

    [Pid]
    ExtraData=796674736977656D7A622E385892A4
    Pid=55274270

    Genuine copy SETUPP.INI file:

    [Pid]
    ExtraData=786F687170637175716954806365EF
    Pid=76487OEM

The numbers shown first"79667473 etc etc & pid number are both the same as what i have.
It then goes on to say " eBay CD indicates it's a Volume License version"

So i think the issue is the Disc ?

    What do you think.

That's really good news because I wasn't at all hopeful of solving the problem with the Ebay disc! You might need to try different settings in the VM in order to get it to connect but I have XP too in my VMware running on Win 7 and for me setting the network adapter to Bridged works just fine. Once you get an internet connection the VMware Tools should install. You can actually live without them but it's far better if you can get them installed.

You change the VM settings in Player > Manage > Virtual Machine Settings. While there you might want to look at the other settings too.

You install software in XP exactly as you would in a regular system - by running an installation disk or an installation file.

EDIT - and don't forget to install an AV and other malware scanners :eek

Just attach your USB in Player > Removable Devices

  24. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

I did look at that but cant see how to attach it.

Each USB device plugged into Win 7 should appear in removable devices and can be attached, as in this pic.

    Ok
I had to disconnect from host and now it shows up fine.
Can you advise the correct steps as if i am in win 7 but need to go to the xp screen, then return back to win 7.

A couple of times when in xp i can still see all the icons on the taskbar of win 7.
Other times i dont even see the start button botytom left of screen.
Ive used xp for 8 years and for some reason this all seems as if its new out today ?

The VM is just another app running in Win 7, so you can switch between the VM and other Win 7 apps simply by using the taskbar icons.
Sounds like you don't yet have the VMware Tools installed. With them installed you can position and size the VM's window to suit, so that you can always see the Win 7 Start button and taskbar.
Once you get XP updated and organised the way you used to have it you will marvel at how familiar it all is - just like using a regular XP system.

Have you got your internet connection working yet? If so you've got several hours of updating to look forward to :-D

  28. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

    Tools installed and al updated.
Sad thing is when I load my software I get the same message as before installing this vm,device not recognised etc.
This is the same message as if the item is not switched on.
Tomorrow my friend in Singapore will install it for me just in case I missed something.
I did notice when it was working in Xp it was assigned to Com13 but now I only see Com 1 or Com 2 this is the same for this now installed Xp or win 7

Do let me know how this goes. Also, don't recollect you giving any information about what it is you are needing to connect to/run on XP. I know from experience that not everything will work as my wife had a mobile phone with a backup application for XP and I could never get that to work in the VM.

    Now installed and working perfect.
    Thanks for the help.
