vmware virtual machine didn't release allocated ram?

Apologies if this isn't the right forum to post this question


A few months back I installed a vmware virtual machine, and put winxp x86 on it.

In creating it I allocated 2gb of ram from the 6gb that my pc was running.

I haven't used it much recently so I removed the virtual pc, but for some reason the 2gb of ram was not released back.

I was wondering if any of you guys might know how I could get windows to recognize it without having to re install.
Im running windows 7 x64, currently with 4gb of ram, although I have 6gb connected to my board.

At 1st I thought there was maybe a faulty stick, but all 3 are recognized separately in each slot so that can't be the cause.

Things I have tried:

- Uninstalled vmware
- searched for vmware file associations and folders, and deleted them.
- deleted all vmware registry files

And now I'm dead out of ideas

Hopefully you guys might be able to help me out on this.

Restarting Windows will not release the RAM?

Thanks for the reply, I checked the ram sticks, and it turns out the problem is that 1 of sockets on the MB isn't working.

So I guess I will have to RMA back to asus
