Vob splitter

I have a family dvd (created for us from lots of old cine reels) which i want to split into smaller parts and then save onto new dvds. The original is in Vob format.

I read somewhere that it helps to change the ext to 'mpeg' but I've no idea where to go from there. :confused

I would like easy to use simple freebie (or cheap) software and simple instructions. Anyone out there who might be able to help please?

I'm a novice in editing!
