I was just wondering what is a good voice chat program to use to communicate to people you are gaming with? I used to use Ventrilo, but somebody has to set up a server for that, and my friend doesn't have his server up anymore. I was wondering what a few other programs are that I could use? (Preferably one that doesn't need a server to be setup to have a chat going, but list the programs anyway even if they need one.)

Steam is a great program that you can use and it comes with a built in voice chat program. Another is Gamespy arcade.

I don't think the Steam voice chat works with other games besides Steam powered games? I already have Steam for CS, but does the voice chat work for other games? Also I heard Gamespy was affiliated with some type of spyware? Anyway, I play Ragnarok Online and City of Heroes and would like to be able to talk to a few friends because these games only have text capabilities and no voice chatting. Major Attitude said that he used to run a voice chat program while playing COH. Does anybody know what voice program he ran? Maybe he will see this post and respond. Thanks for the suggestions BTW.

Right now I'm not using Gamespy Arcade because I have steam but I used to have it and it worked fine, no spyware.

Alright thanks, I'll definitely look into that. Does Gamespy voice chat work while not playing games that are powered by Gamespy? I would be able to use Gamespy for the games I listed above?

I haven't seen a game that isn't compatible with gamespy. Gamespy is just a bunch of servers put into a nice browser.

Okay cool, thanks a lot man. I am not using my own PC at the moment, but when I get a chance I will definitely download it and check it out. So the other people I play these games with and I would be able to have our own private voice chat server on gamespy?

Try Skype, a free internet phone program. You pretty much have to have broadband to use it, but it has excellent sound quality and is secure. Download it at http://www.skype.com/download.html

The Nascar league I'm in uses Teamspeak. Been using it for over a year and it works great. I recommend it.

Teamspeak always has a bit of a lag... about 1 to 2 seconds. So you get fragged and then you hear your mate yell "behind you". But it is free.

We use teamspeak when playing DCX, and there is never lag. must be a problem with the server. i recommend using teamspeak.

    Teamspeak is what we use
You still need a server up but I believe there are many free servers or download the server version and run it and use the client to connect

Teamspeak, Ventrilo and Roger Wilco are all good programs to use. If you want to host more than 8 people with Ventrilo you will have to use the old version of it or purchase host services. Teamspeak also has host servers for purchase as well that has good transfer rates.
