   I'm looking for software I can use to record my little girls voice. I have Ventrilo for gaming and I know it can be used to record speech but it doesn't seem to work without being connected to a server. So I guess I need something specificaly for this task. My attempts to locate stuff have thrown up a lot but it all seems to have a price tag and I'm wary of hidden features like adware etc that I didn't ask for.

   I assume that you are running XP or Vista. Since I run neither, I can't check but if you look in programs then accessories isn't there some sort of Voice recorder listed? There was one in earlier versions of windows.
