I am using Yahoo Messenger for VOIP phone service. Works fine. I use it from my desktop and laptop. I have been looking at cordless phones compatible with Yahoo Messenger and there are only a couple. A linksys is available for $80.00. I also see an adapter which plugs into my USB port and allows me to use a "regular phone or a standard cordless phone".

Can anyone give me an opinion on the adapters?

That was an old question and I never did get an answer. I did wonder about the magic jack though.
I have been using skype for a couple of years now and am very happy with it. I have a number assigned to my computer and if I do not answer, it forwards to my land line. I spend Winters in Texas and got a second number assigned to my computer this past Winter which is local to the town in Texas.

If you don't mind spending money upfront, OOMA offers the best overall deal on VOIP service. I've been using it as my main business phone line for a month.

    * The box retails for $249, although Fry's usually has it available in store and on line for $199. For this price, you get FREE calling throughout the US and Canada (up to 5000 minutes/month) FOR LIFE! Your only monthly fees are excise tax and 911 service, about $3.50/month.

    * The sound quality is as good as a traditional land line (not just my opinion, Consumer Reports gave it a top rating as well). All that's required is a broadband (DSL or Cable) connection of at least 768KB/s.

    * It hooks directly to your router and existing telephone or a telephone jack to cover the entire house - the PC does NOT have to be turned on to use it and you can still use your existing telephones.

    * Unlike Skype, MagicJack, etc., it has enhanced 911 - if you dial 911 in an emergency and cannot speak or are disconnected, your address shows up on the dispatcher's screen so help can be sent immediately.

    * International calls are dirt cheap (go to www.ooma.com for the rates).

Although Skype, MagicJack and other PC-based services cost less for the equipment, the features and voice quality of OOMA are worth considering. Compared to Vonage's monthly rates, the OOMA box will pay for itself in 6-8 months. Compared to a standard land line (AT&T, etc.) it will pay for itself in even less time.
