Volume Control Icon Missing

Hi. I can't seem to find my Volume Icon in the Notification Area. I did the obvious and went to sound properties to click "Place volume icon in taskbar." I got an error message that said "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove programs in control panel. So I did some searching and tried to run this:
start
run
cmd
d:cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

i keep getting error messages. no destination specified or cannot open file


I am so frustrated and do not know what to do. Anyone's help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you

 

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in: EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

Lastly, run this edit: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/netvol.reg

OK. I see it now. In the command below, notice the space after ex_ c You didn't put a space there.

e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

Ok. I did that and the message said Can't open input file sndvol32.ex_

 

Instead of typing the command, just copy and paste the part I put in quotes below. I still think you are missing a space or something.

d:
cd i386
