I have no idea how to prevent the tv from blaring noise. I like the tv on while Im at the computer, reading, etc and when the program goes to commerical IT GOES INTO A VERY LOUD VOLUME

can I connect anything to the tv to run the sound through to prevent this from happening?

have you tried the sound menu on your tv? many tvs have loudness controls and special sound effects modes which may be the cause of your problem, be aware that adverts are recorded at a higher volume than normal to attract your attention.

Are you using cable or satellite? If so you should check the audio settings on the tuner box, what your looking for is AVL or auto volume levelling which will level all volume out, another option to look for is dynamic equalisation or night mode which will pull all the frequencies into a tighter band. If your TV has any bass or treble lower the bass down and raise the treble, it may sound a little tinny but low frequencies travel further than higher frequencies so should lessen the problem.

It's a common problem caused by the TV channel companies and can't really be helped, I've noticed the cheaper channels do it much more than the decent channels so tell her to stop watching them, your tv provider can also increase the volume of the ads I've heard verizon does this alot in the US so consider a change in provider.

    EDIT

Check this out, it came into effect and became enforcable on december 13 last year, if you think your provider may be in breach you might want to consider a complaint?

$60 for a box that only levels volume? I'm sure you could get a cheap or used surround or stereo system with built in auto volume levelling for that and you would need them anyway to use that box, hell bet you could get a used lcd tv with auto volume levelling.

Anyway tell her to turn the TV off at night I need the CO2 credits to power my computer.

Its cable from comcast, goes from my wall, into my tivo.
the problem she has is if she sleeps in front of the tv, the volume changes wake her up....I'm unsure about treble/bass/ace of base. all I know is she bitches about it sometimes.
I got her set up with netflix to watch that brand new show, I can't think of the name, the one with the hot to trot detective who is always shaking her *** and wearing those low low low cut half-shirts...oh yes, MURDER SHE WROTE..because that has no commericals and plays every episode in order, so she can get her 9 hours of sleep

They have tried to fix this issue by passing laws since 08, I think, example of a recent try is the CALM Act

I have no interest in changing the world. which is why Im not out fighting for my right to not wear a seatbelt. etc
See, I also want them to label food with transfats, explain to me why fluoride is good for me,(even though I still get cavities), and why the seatbelt law helps me and why the **** am I slowing down in school zones?(oh, suddenly survival of the fittest isnt the way to go? which will lead to.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icmRCixQrx8)

But I digress, I just try to fix my own life by reading ingredients on food, wearing a T-shirt that looks like I'm wearing a belt, distilling my own water, avoiding schools and not brusing my teeth with toothpaste that contrains bleach and triclosan(insecticide/fungicide) and sodium lauryl sulfate(detergent)
you are correct, I picked one up for $18 off amazon, including shipping.
As for her tossing out her TV and getting a cheap one, not going to happens
My mom isnt going to toss out or change her 50" plasma...shoot, the woman still uses a flip phone that can't get pictures.....which is why I made this thread for her, because my Dad has an IPhone
My Neurotherapis explained to her how tv inferes with sleep/REM, etc.
I can't even get her to go to the gym at all, even though over christmas, I was at home and showed her the gym(which is free) and, since for the past year, she gave me excuses why she never could just go for a walk outside, even though she was very overweight and her GP told her to lose weight, and she had gotten boob cancer in 08,(obesity is a factor for getting cancer), and her oncologist told her to lose weight, I got her a treadmill(craigslist) and she has lost close to 70lbs now and her health is so much better, but she won't do this.

I dunno how much it mattes, her mom was the same way and she lived until she wished for death, long before it found her.....course, she had dementia, damn toothpaste/seatbelts/transfats/KIDS ON MY LAWN;)
