This can happen for a number of reasons including:

    (1) The "most likely suspects" are that either the wires connecting the speakers to the PC are either loose or need replacement or perhaps the speakers may have gone bad. Also there may be a broken or lose wire in the speaker cable itself that's causing the crackling. One sure way to check this is would be to unplug these wires from and then plug them back in. Another way to check this would be to try using headphones.

You can also test it way: Disconnect all the speakers and listen to headphones to see if you get the same "crackle" through the headphones. If not, then connect the speaker again and see if it comes on. If so, then maybe you are getting some kind of problem via the speaker wires. Try different speakers (or speaker wires) to see what effect they have.

    (2) Are there any cables near the speakers or along their wires that might be causing a lot of interference? Cheaper speaker wire which isn't shielded can sometimes be disrupted by foreign signals, especially if you are using analog.

    (3) Do you hear noise while playing only mp3 or any other file also? Try playing wav, or audio CD. If sound is crackling in all cases then I would recommend you to look for the latest driver available for you soundcard, otherwise examine audio codec you use.

    (4) You'll can also get this "crackling sound" when the audio driver is corrupted or if another device is on the same IRQ (interrupt request line). An IRQ is an interrupt request, and is the name for the actual signal that is used when a peripheral requests an interrupt of the processor.

    (4) If you are using a Soundblaster X-Fi Card be sure to check out this thread:

    Good Luck
