vpn help needed, how to do it?

I want to set up a desktop with XP as a server. It will be miles away from a client laptop with Vista that goes home with me and to work with me as well. I have tried several different things I found surfing the net, but so far nothing has worked. Currently I have both pcs with me and can set and play with but they have to be ready by this weekend.....

Why VPN? Using it to connect ot an enterprise network?

Most of thime you can get away with a remote desktop.
Remote desktop can be encrypted like VPN, gives you access to your 'home' desktop, and can transfer files to & from, some even transfer clipboard contents.
