I have Windows XP home edition system that is running Symantec Client VPN though a cable modem to get to my work network. No problems running that way. Then I installed a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. I have it configured and have my XP Home system connected through a wired connection on the router.

I am still able to connect to the internet and make my VPN connection. However I am not able to ping most of the IP addresses on my work network or map a drive to any shared locations. There are 2 address I can ping and access the application located on those addresses. If I connect the desktop directly to the cable modem, the problem goes a way and I have access to everything on our work network.

Is there something special I need to configure on the router? This is really bugging me.

Taking a guess, since I don't know your settings, but you may have to set the wireless to either the ap default mode, or, if it's in wireless bridge mode to the lan mac addresses.

I have a similar set-up. I have a broadband router and go from it to the WAN port on a Linksys Wireless Router (LWR). I have enabled DHCP on the LWR and have eight PCs accessing the WEB via the LWR - both wired and wireless. When I connected my work laptop and tried to connect to the company WAN via a VPN, I would connect to the company network but couldn't see the Exchange server or other servers that I need to access.

After much research and troubleshooting the solution was to back rev the VPN client running on the laptop. As soon as I called the helpdesk and described the problem, they emailed me a link for the old client. I installed that and all worked. Recently they just went to a new VPN client and the VPN connection is solid. I have been online with the VPN for days at a time.

Bottom line is, it most likely is not your configuration of the LWR. When you install the LWR, your PC is most likely getting a private IP address that your client can't work with. As soon as you connect directly to the boradband router and directly to the WEB, it gets a routable IP address and the client doesn't have any issues. You may look into the client's configuration and see if it can be configured to work with a private address.

    Hope this helps.
