    I've had 2 PC's crash with W10.
The latest one had the bsod but I wasn't there and don't know what it said.
Then it went to black screen and looked like this pic:

I made discs when I got the computer, but can't remember if it was W7 or 8 or 8.1
It won't do anything when I press "any key" with the first disc in the drive.

    Try recovery options:
To get them in Win 10, restart the machine then when at log on HOLD DOWN the shift key, click on the far right bottom power icon and choose RESTART

When I start up the PC, I get the Acer logo, and Del: Enter Setup F12 Boot Menu.
After several seconds it goes the the screen in the picture I've attached in my first post.

Judging by the date shown in the picture, it's Windows 7.

Yes, I noticed on a sticker that it's Windows 7...right you are.

Keep on repeatedly tapping that Del key as soon as you turn it on.

I'd guess that the BSOD type was most likely a 0x7B or 0xF4 but we're not going to know until we can access the drive.

Do you have a friend, colleague or neighbour who's useful with PCs that could help you? Do you have another PC that you could use to add the 'bad' drive from this one to for testing?

No, I don't know anyone that could help. My other PC is not working either....I'll get to that one if/when I get this one working. When I get back into Set Up, I'll take a picture and post it here hoping you can tell me what choice to make.

Do you have an option that includes a name that looks like, or might refer to (Seagate/Samsung/Western Digital/IBM/Maxtor)?

Here is where I have to make my first choice:

No, I don't see anything like that anywhere :/

This is my first time asking for help, so I apologize if I reply/type in the wrong boxes.
I hope my picture 2 posts above is helpful to what I need to do, and that someone can tell me what to choose there :)

Read carefully the keyboard controls at the bottom. Using the up/down arrow keys move highlight to each of the other selections and hit return key look for any option for boot sequence. If not there, hit escape key to go back to start page and highlight a new item and look there. I suspect
you might find it in Advanced Bios Features. Wherever you find it, use the up/down arrow key to highlight the boot sequence option. Use the
plus/minus key to toggle sequence options. When you get the CD/hardrive option (CD first) hit return key to select it, then F10 key to save and exit set up.

Would ones of these be what I'm looking for?

Yes, that's the right page. Now, move the down to "1st Boot Device" and use plus or minus key until it reads [CD&DVD], then move down to
"2nd Boot Device" and change it to [Hard Disk]. You might also move down to the "4th Boot Device" and disable [LAN] if disable is available.
The Nvidia boot error, you got, seems to relate to an attempt to boot from a network device. Hit F10 to Save and Exit. Changing the boot order
often fixes the problem. Hope it does for you, too.

Okay, I change 1st Boot Device and 2nd Boot Device to what you said. 4th Boot Device had no disable.
I'm still getting that first screen I posted a shot of in my first post, which somehow showed up as a link to click on to view.

What would happen if I clicked on "Optical Disk Drive Priority" and put the recovery disks in that I made? Does that make any sense...

  19. StruldBrug

    StruldBrug Sergeant

Yes, it makes sense, but I don't think changing priority settings is necessary. Putting a recovery or boot CD in and restarting should at least tell
you if BIOS is finding it now, instead of give you the same error as before, now that the 1st Boot Device is set to CD/DVD. What concerns me is
if you upgraded to Win10 and the CD is for Win7, there won't be much you can do with it at this point, other than to tell if the boot order is now
working. Try it and see if the CD comes up with anything. If not , you might try changing priority settings.

Okay thanks, I will try that.
Just to clarify, I got the first screenshot minus the error message at the top....just the last 2 lines are there.

The PXE-ROM is used when remotely imaging a computer on a network. You would not need to do this, so this either means the power to your hard drive, or your hard drive has failed.

The "LAN" (PXE-ROM) option is listed last, so your boot order as it stands in your photo is fine, unless you are booting from a disc. In that case, options 1 and 2 need to be swapped. HOWEVER, if the hard drive is not recognized, and you have a bootable disc in the drive, the boot order in your picture would still work for booting from recovery discs. The BIOS would just work it's way down the list.

How old it this machine, and is it the original hard drive?

I tried booting up with recovery disk, but no go.
I tried to change to "Optical Disk Drive Priority" but it said it wasn't installed. Phooey!
Thanks very much for your help.

It's 6 or 7 years old and has it's original hard drive.

Do you have power to the optical, and hard disc drives?

Have you checked the cable connections, and reseated them?

Is the machine clean, and free of dust, or lint?

Make, model, and service tag if applicable.

Saw your post previous to mine.

This could also be indicative of a SATA issue either with the controller or the motherboard itself. Or, it could be a power issue.

With a machine this old, it's a crapshoot.

Replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard.
    It's a 3 volt CR2032.

Mekanic, I concur, but I was hoping for an easy solution. Glad you can pick up here, as I tried to do. My next thought was to open the case and
check and reset connections. Good Idea, Eldon ... batt check.

Zelda, did you still get the aforementioned error, when you tried the CD? If so, it probably isn't bootable. Mekanic should be better equipped than me at this point, to help you move forward. It would be good if you identified the make/model of your PC for further research.

I will open the tower to check the cable connections and for dust tomorrow. I have a bad back and can't lift it tonight.
It's an Acer Aspire 64 bit. I believe this is the model number: AX-3400-E2202

I'm hoping it's the cause of the problems.
Remember to also unplug the PC from the socket outlet.

Well... the fan was clogged with 'dust', so maybe the CPU overheated. Sigh.

A clean machine is a happy machine. I've had more than one PC where after a thorough cleaning and reseating of the motherboard components, a machine that would not boot did so just fine. A couple needed an OS reinstall, due to software corruption which was insurmountable.

Give her a careful and thorough cleaning. I prefer a compressor and an air chuck, but this video is pretty good:

Excellent cleaning video. Mine was not that bad, but I can understand a thorough cleaning would be beneficial. Not sure Iso alcohol is available in over 70% here. Those cans of air are 10 bucks, yikes.
Thanks so much. I will attempt this task, or as much as I can get supplies for it, soon!

If you have one, or know someone with a pancake compressor and an air chuck, that's an option too. Most tradesmen have little compressors like that for pneumatic tools.
