W2000Pro migration to WinXP Pro problem

Hi,
I have a system that was running Windows 2000 Professional and I attempted to upgraded the OS to Windows XP Professional. XP did install, but it does not load the original Desktop or any of the programs. All the programs and data are still on the root C:\ drive and I can view them through Explorer. When I restart the system it now gives me two OS boot prompts....either 2000 or XP. When I select 2000, the original desktop and all the programs and data load just like before and everything works fine.

I can live with 2000 if needed, but I really would prefer to use the XP image as there are newer XP-compatible only programs that I'd like use. Any idea on how to associate the new XP image with my previous programs and users settings?

If you didn't use an XP Pro Upgrade installation CD, it will install as a second OS, as you've already seen. If you can uninstall the XP, keeping the Win2000 intact, you can upgrade the Win2000 installation to XP Pro by booting to your Win2000 desktop, and putting the XP Pro Upgrade CD in the drive, and starting the install from the Win2000 desktop. If you don't have the upgrade XP disc, you can't really perform a successful upgrade of 2000. And you can't use an upgrade CD of XP Home to upgrade Win2000, it MUST be XP Pro....

 

Darn, I used the new full version of WinXPPro, not the upgrade version. If I can successfully uninstall the WinXPPro, and then use an upgrade version of XP Pro, then what is the probability that I can truly upgrade from the 2000 OS and have it migrate all the programs and data? Just curious. Thanks.

 

Just to make sure before I purchase this, is this the correct version you referenced before: "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Upg. Serv. Pack 2" This is the only sku I saw on tigerdirect.com for an "upgrade" version. Also, side question, I purchase most my stuff from Tigerdirect.com as they usually have good prices. Do you guys recommend any other sites that offer better pricing and service? Thanks. BG
