W2K Pro Desktop freezes at boot (100% showing performance meter)

I was initially having problems with PC connected to cable modem, and internet, throwing infinite IE pop-ups before system froze, forcing re-boot.

I installed Spy-Bot software to check for malicious internet downloads to my computer. It now runs automatically at boot-time.

Even with this protection (along with daily Norton Anti-Virus updates, and scan), my machine is freezing when desktop loads. The Arrow icon (mouse icon) cannot move; performance meter from Task Manager shows mostly 100%. I cannot do anything but re-boot, and the freeze happens again.

Do I have to re-install Win 2K Pro from CD? Is there a folder that contains .EXE, and other programs that automatically execute at boot-time?

What is best solution to this problem?

I'm not totally clear on solution after going to this page. Is there a routine that can scan my Startup programs, and tell me what they are, and give me option to remove them ???

    Yes...

type msconfig in the run box...

also, when you say that the resources are at 100% are you able to see which program or just a general 100%...?

OK go to Start/Run type msconfig and enter go to startup tab.all programs that are shown and checked are starting up.
    Here's the Keys
    Key:

"Y" - Normally leave to run at start-up

"N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary

    "U" - User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary

"X" - Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs"

    "?" - Unknown

Lets say you want to chk out Norton,Press letter N and every program starting with the letter N will be shown
    Demo shown here
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_n.php
Those that are safe to uncheck are shown by the code shown above.

msconfig isn't in Win2k. If you find it online (google) you can use the WinXP version, but obviously there's no guarantee it won't wreck your system.
