W8 Layout to W7 Layout

  1. Hello Geeks,

I have looked all over the Majorgeeks forum and have not found anything relating to layout change. What I mean by layout change is changing the Windows 8.1 Layout to operate like Windows 7. The reason I'm looking for this is because the new laptop I'm buying already has Windows 8.1 installed and I am really not a fan of the layout. They don't give an option for the OS change on the website but the computer specifications are exactly what I want. I do not want to buy a Windows 7 product key considering the price so is there anyway to make the layout on Windows 8.1 function like Windows 7?

If the laptop isn't touchscreen enabled, it should now default to the desktop on login instead of the Metro Start Screen (which many people dislike). Mine does. There's also a configurable program I run called Classic Shell which will give you a Start button and menu. I'm actually liking Win 8.1 except for two things — you CAN'T disable UAC, only silence it and the fact that you log in to Microsoft and not strictly locally.

I have 4 accounts on Win 8.1 All local. My wife's, mine and 2 others for troubleshooting or loan to guest/ family members. MicroSoft doesn't recommend local - of course- and you can't downloaqd apps or sync between devices. Since I do niether I don't use it. I still download programs for 8.1 here at MajorGeeks and all is well!

I use classic shell and it seems like win7

The start still has the option to flip to the metro look too in case you want to use it every now and then as well.

Personally i don't like the metro look much nor do i find it useful. However if i had a touch monitor or touch lcd laptop with windows 8 on it i would definately find more use more the metro ui

Win 8 is basically Win 7 with an optional new gui tacked on top. Just boot direct to the desktop and you'll barely notice you're not running Win 7. If you need the crutch of a Start Menu then you can download 3rd party Start Menu replacements like Classic Shell.
