W98 Explorer is causing a page fault

Don't know what is causing this--

Have an old P166 with dial-up running on W98SE. Have installed AntiVir Personal and Sygate Personal Firewall but am still getting the idiotic about:blank spyware. Tried to install IE6 to see if the newer security would help but got an error message midway through the install. Restarted and now have this message that Explorer has performed an illegal operation. Details say something about a page fault and stack dump. Tried the 111 QuikInstaller on this site. Unfortunately, the Reinstaller program needs a good configuration file to work.

Anybody have any idea how to get around this? I can reduce the error window and continue to use windows but as soon as I click OK, I lose the entire desktop.
