Looking at hint #63. Scrap some fonts--from Microsofts 100+ Windows 98 hints

    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-GB;835834

    They say

QUOTE---Open the Fonts applet in Control Panel and remove the ones you don’t need – it’s surprising how much speed you can gain---END OF QUOTE

When I look at the Fonts folder--Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Fonts I find I have 275 fonts listed taking up 32meg of room.

The space taken is not a problem as I have plenty of HD space but as I am always after speed gains,

Can anyone recommend what fonts to keep. I read somewhere that you only really need a.dozen or so.

I would like to delete those I don't think I will need, back them up to a CD or floppy, and see if it makes any difference. Has anyone tried this and what were the results. TIA. Bazza

My suggestion is to open them, keep the "families" you like and throw the others away. If any of them start with a city/state name ie. Chicago, Georgia, or mono type toss them.

Thanks SilverD, there really are some weird ones. I will try your suggestion and check out various families as you suggest. Baz

Hi "baz" , make sure you SAVE any fonts you remove, I did this same thing and really messed up the computer - had to go back and reinstall ALL fonts - there are only certain ones you can delete - suggestion - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Thanks Abby Sue and JoeN. I will do abit of experimenting and shift them rather than delete them. Will check out the link. Bazza

Am I correct to assume that too many fonts slow down other OS's as well?

    Re: Fonts to keep..

Again welcome back, Cowboy. Great to have Aussies in MG, so we feel a part of the MG world community. When you uninstall a program do they remove their fonts as well?. Guess it depends on the " smarts" that the programmer has in keeping track of all the stuff installed in the first place. Bazza
