Has anyone ever come across this before?
When I try to access windows update from a certain computer I am directed to an unistall that is not available. I think that maybe it could be a remnant of a removed piece of spyware or virus, because the computer in question is checking out as being clean.

    ---------------------------

This is what I see when I click start, notice a strange icon next to windows update.

This is the box that appears when I click windows update in the start menu.

If I right click windows update in the start menu, then this is the information that is given. I should imagine changing the target location here will make everything alright again, but I am not sure what to change it to.

    Does anyone have any ideas?
I can still get windows updates using other methods, but I would like to get it back to normal for the person who's computer it is.

I ran into something like this on a computer I was repairing. Turned out the time/date of the computer was set incorrectly. It was set for some date in the future. Corrected that and everything was good.

Let us know if that fixes the problem.

Have you run file checker on the system:
    To start System File Checker
Click Start, point to Programs, Accessories, and System Tools, and then click System Information.
Select the Tools menu and click System File Checker. The following dialog box appears:
    To scan for corrupt files
In System File Checker, click Scan for altered files, and then click Start.

System File Checker scans the system using a default baseline contained in a file named Default.sfc.

upwizun.exe is the Update Wizard Uninstall (probably). Just trying to figure out where this all fits in.

    Have you run Dr Watson?
Click on Start > Run and type in drwatson.exe then click OK.

An icon will show up in your System Tray (bottom right of the taskbar).

If you double-click on the icon the program will look over everything for you and tell you if it found something unhealthy. If you right-click on the System Tray icon you will see some options you can set as well.

You can also create a new Windows Update in the start menu, if that's your goal. Also, that is the correct icon for the Update Wizard Uninstall, don't know how it got there but it looks like a legit file.

If you want to replace it follow these steps.

If all else fails go to this site and get all the updates you need.
    go to http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html

Also do a search on Bigfix on majorgeeks site and download this freeware. it will help you get your computer updated.

    Nope, does not appear to.

Mostly IE patches, 2k, xp, and perhaps vista....

What Matacumbie states in his last post, is what I believe the OP really wants.

Totally agree with you on Steve's post in creating a new link.

Also maybe worth going direct and using the online route as a backup? http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Sorry for leaving this so long guys but I only get near this computer every so often.

@TimW, tried DrWatson, only changes it found made to System files were by Windows Updates.

@ Matacumbie, wupdmgr.exe does not seem to exist on thesytem anywhere.

@ Halo, looks like http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ is going to be the only option really.

Thanks for trying to help me on this one anyway.

Under C:\windows, you do not have wupdmgr?

It should be the very last file, very bottom, on the right-hand side.

You are right, it's not there. Should be right after Wscript. Have you done a search for it?

You know support ended today for Win98.
