I am tring to set up a few machines to wake on lan but i am having problems getting it set up. On the machine that i want to wake up i enabled WOL in the bios and the LAN lights remain lite even after the computer has been shutdown so i belive that it is setup correctly. I've used several different programs(i think the one i like the most is http://ahh.sourceforge.net/wol/) to attempt to wake the computer but none have worked even though they say that they have sent the magic packet correctly. I think the packet is getting lost somewhere between the two machines. Does any one have any suggestions?

When you say "even after the computer has been shutdown", you sound like you want your machine to Boot On LAN, rather than Wake On LAN.

isn't wake on lan and boot on lan the same thing? but anyways it has to be a problem with the NIC or MB b/c i got it to work on a computer that has an on-board ethernet port.

WOL is a feature that merely wakes a powered-on computer from stand-by upon a LAN signal. Boot On LAN turns on a computer that has been powered off, in a similar manner, but the mobo must support it, as it must interact with the power supply to turn the machine on.

What do i need to look for to tell if the motherboard supports it? I would think that if the LAN lights stay on when it is powered down that it would be able to support it but maybe i am wrong.

The first place to look would be the motherboard's manual. If you don't have one, possibly the manufacturer makes a downloadable version available on its website.
