Wake-up call?

I have a Fujitsu 2010 laptop which is up-to-date with XP SP2 etc and Norton Security 2005... I am having a problem running a scheduled virus scan.

    What should happen is:

    1. I close the lid and the computer goes into standby and I go to bed...
    2. At 3am windows update should run and upload any available updates.
    3. At 4am the scheduled antivirus scan should wake the computer using a pre-entered screen password and run a full scan.

    What actually happens:

    1. At 3am nothing happens.
    2. At 4am the scheduled scan wakes the computer and the NAV log registers that the scan has started.
    3. The firewall log registers that Windows update and Norton Liveupdate have contacted the computer.
    4. In the morning I find that windows updates have been installed (if any) but the anti-virus scan has not finished.

    My question is:
Does Windows autoupdate need the computer to be logged on and is it being opportunistic when running as soon as the task scheduler logs the computer on to run the virus scan? Or, more likely, I am doing something wrong...

Any help would be most welcome!

Perhaps they are side effect's in sleep mode, try to disable sleep mode for a night and check results

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Last night I set the power management to "never" for both turning off the hard disc and for standby mode, however, the computer still goes into standby when the lid is closed. There was no change to the situation.

Tonight I shall try moving the virus scan to 0100 hours, so it may be completed before the scheduled Windows Update at 0300 hours.

I have also set a 2 min delay on the NAV Liveupdate "NetDetect" schedule which runs every four hours, so I hope it won't run if the computer is active doing anything else (ie a virus scan).

It seems too bad if Norton Liveupdate is interferring with Norton virus scans...

Thanks again and any other ideas would be appreciated.

This is turning into a bit of a blog...

NAV still continues to not finish, even when scheduled to run before everything else. But the same thing happened this morning when I ran it with the computer logged-on. It seems to be ok if I jog the mouse a few times during the scan, but if I leave it, I return to a blank screen. Then, pushing the ON button induces a normal shutdown and the only way out is to close the lid, wait for the computer to go into standby and then open it again and re-logon.

Well, sorry for boring you all with my trivial problems. Ain't computers great!

i know on the power button, there are options (in power management) you can change (if you haven't), i have mine set to "ask me what to do". as for closing the lid, i'm not sure. my laptop would disconnect from the internet (wireless) when i close the lid, i don't remember if i found anything for that, now i just close the lid, but don't latch it (so it's cracked open). - sos
