I would like to establish a WAN for users outside of my regular network. I am experiencing some difficulty, and perhaps someone out there can help.

From my existing LAN switch, I have run a Cat. 5 cable to another router. From this router, I have run a cable to another switch. (Both router and switch are Cisco)

How do I assign a specific IP address to that router? (I do not have the original CD that came with the router) I want to use this router so that users connecting do not require an IP address, the router should assign. Now that I have connected this way, I am still not able to access the internet.

    Any help would be appreciated

if you have access to the routers admininstration, all you should have to do is enable DHCP. then enabled DHCP on the client machines.

    You are correct

Thank you for the quick response !!! Absolutely correct, If I could sign onto the router, under administrator, I would be able to modify the settings. As a matter of fact, from what I have read, this router defaults to those setting.

My problem, however, is that I do not know how to connect to the router. I do not have the original CD which would have come with the router. Do you think the router will default back to those settings, allowing IP address assigning, upon connection? I do not know how the router was set-up before.

On any other network, I have simply used a browser to connect to the router. But you see, I knew the IP address of those particular routers. Is there a way to determine the IP address of the router??? Isn't there a default IP - like 192.168.0.0 ???

what manufacture/part number is your switch/router?

you can also check out majorgeek's Admin tools, and find
something that will locate the ip/mac address of your switch,
    if it has one assigned.
that may be helpfull, but not much help if Administration
access has a password, your best bet is to look up (at the
manufacture's site) how to reset the unit, there is usually
a pinhole or button to press while you powercycle the unit,
and you have a couple minutes to log on w/out password.
Check and see if it has a serial port on the unit, you will have
direct access to admin if you can connect through there.

    Awesome

Thank you both for the information. I return to the office tomorrow and will try your suggestions.

BTW - I am using a Cisco Router 2500 connecting to Cisco Catalist 2800 switch. I will check with Cisco site.

Thank you once again ! !
