I'm trying to decide the best free program to use in drawing maps. The maps I'm making are for a delivery job. I don't really need color or fancy shapes or anything like that. I've looked at the following, and noted the weaknesses of each, and was wondering if there was a better alternative:

    1. Paint - It lets me draw freely, but its crucial weakness is that you can't insert text at odd angles without erasing the nearby lines. It only lets me put text in horizontally.
    2. SmartDraw - The free version is only a trial, meaning I can't rely on it long-term. Any day it could shut down on me.
    3. Open Office.org Draw - You can't download this product separately; you have to download the entire suite, which I can't really spare the space for.
