I have a home video recorded by someone at church on a dvd camera. I
don't have any more info than that. When I Explore it on My Computer, it
shows 8 files with names like VIDEO_TS.BUP or VIDEO_TS.VOB but in a mouseover it says IFO file (all this is totally Greek to me as I've never heard of these extensions, and they seem to be marked Read-only); in my Dell Media Player it also lets me jump ahead to 24 different Chapters.

I'm runnning Win XP on a Dell Inspiron 8600. I don't really know how to use any of the applications I have, although I have burned selections from audio CDs and copied DVDs on the Sonic Record Now (basic version; the "My DVD" is the LE or cheapo version) that was loaded on the puter when I bought it. With XP I also have the Win Movie Maker and Win Media Player, plus some version of QuickTime and Real Player.

Would it be at all possible to do either of the two following things without buying some expensive program:
    1) only burn the last part (what my Dell Media Player calls Chapters 9 - 24) onto another DVD and/or
    2) burn the sound only (preferably that last half but I'd take whatever I can get) to an audio CD playable in a car or CD player? I've Searched for the word "convert" on all those programs and haven't found info that helped at all.

I Searched for "convert" and "dvd" on this software forum and then for ".IFO" but didn't quite hit what I needed.

Feeling that I'm barking up a Tree Of Lost Causes and grateful for any advice in simple terms,

PS - This is all legal as I've been asked by the parties involved to copy the
    presentation for free distribution.

PPS - I love this site! I can always come and get some kind of answer, and everyone has always been so polite to me. Grazie to you all!!

Please see this link for some good information on backing up and burning DVDs.

A DVD's file structure is like this

at the root, we have an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. Intuitively, they hold the video files in the latter and dubbed languages, subtitles, etc in the AUDIO folder.

In the video folder, you will have .VOB files corresponding to each chapter of the DVD. They're usually named VIDEO_1.VOB, VIDEO_2.VOB, and so on. (You can even play these individually in a media player like VLC)

Now, if you can burn these folders and their contents directly to DVD, it MAY work in a DVD player. However, it is typically more reliable to generate an .ISO file using the applications recommended in the above link, and then burn THAT file to DVD, which will translate into the correct file structure on the disc. I believe DivXtoDVD might do the trick for you in this case.

THanks. I downloaded the app and will try toodling with it later this week, Lord willing. Worst comes to worst I'll just keep burning DVD copies of the whole shebang with my Sonic, but it would be nice to cut it into two parts at least. I appreciate the explanation and suggestion -- you're a gem!

Agree with GrammawNewbie, thanks Mada_Milty for the explanations and link to an earlier thread. I have printed out your earlier link and will give a copy to #2 son as he wants to experiment. Bazza
