Neighbor's son took my computer to clean it up and now I found a dual boot configuration of W2K and XP. I want to use XP only and would like to remove W2K. I also want to be sure on how to save files from W2K to use in XP.

Also just added a DLink dir-655 wireless router and everything has slowed down inmensely. Not sure if it has anything to do with have 2 OS.

I've included System Information as it appears when I am logged into XP not W2K.

Getting rid of W2K will be simple, but first, what are these files in W2K that you want to save? That needs to be dealt with first.

There are a few programs as well as pictures saved on the W2K desktop that are not showing on XP desktop and I can't seem to find them when I'm in XP.

Other than that there is nothing else.

Also do you think that the wireless problems and the very slow processing time stems from having the 2 OS systems on my computer?

No, I would not say so.

I would say this DLink new addition is what I would focus on.

    Good Luck

Thre is more than one way to set up a dual boot, so when you are in XP can you see the W2K partition in My Computer?

Agree with above comment about the DLink btw. Having a dual boot doesn't slow things down.

    1. "when you are in XP can you see the W2K partition in My Computer?"
Not sure how to do this but I can't seem to see any w2k stuff.

    2. Agree with above comment about the DLink btw. Having a dual boot doesn't slow things down.
Yes I agree. Why would I even want a dula boot of W2K and XP; I could understand having a dual boot for a Windows and Linux.

Another question then. If you boot W2K what is its drive letter in My Computer? And same question for if you boot XP.

The primary & active partition ie the boot partition will always take the 1st drive letter available ie C:\

Sorry - senior moment with that one. I should have asked whether the other OS was visible as D:, whichever one was booted.

What I was really trying to establish was whether neighbour's son has been clever and installed a Grub type MBR, which would always hide the alternate OS from the active one.

Depends. I believe that if you use the windows boot manager then you would see the other o/s as D:\.

I do not use the above method but use various 3rd party boot loaders instead. Grub will hide any other primary partition yes and so would most/all other such boot managers. In my opinion, this is the only way to do it. The MS way is in my opinion fraught with danger.

    Good Luck

My point is that if Grub or similar has been installed it would explain the OP's statement "I can't seem to find them when I'm in XP". So it would really help if the OP would say whether the alternate OS is visible as drive D, as that would indicate it's using the M$ dual booting method, and extracting files from W2K will be straightforward.

well if the op wants to remove 2k, then the way forwards as you are probably well aware is to use a proprietary prog such as BiNG or PM or other and remove it that way. Using any such progs will be safe & retain the integrity of the MBRs
