    Hi Guys

I recently bought a HIS HD 5850 iCooler V (non - turbo version), and so far it seems like a good card, the temps are quite impressive - IDLE: approx 30c MAX LOAD:approx 62c @ stock settings (725/1000).

Before buying this card i originaly had my mind set on the Turbo version which is (as far as i can tell) exactly the same card as the non - turbo version but is overclocked to 765/1125. Given that they are essentialy the same card - i figured that the turbo version just has a modified bois that raises the stock speeds/ voltage.

So i figured that if i could flash the non - turbo version with turbo's bios, then that would essentialy turn my version into the Turbo one...

As far as i know - i can't think of any reason why it wouldnt work, but if anyone knows that this would not work, please let me know.

So if anyone out there has the HIS 5850 iCooler V 'Turbo' card, could you please share your bios with me so that i can turn my card into the Turbo version?

    Thanks

    I agree with Just Playin

You could brick your card if you flash it with the wrong bios. It's better to overclock it yourself.

You wouldn't get any improvement from flashing that bios on it for overclocking.

    Hi

I know i could just overclock...and have tried that, i tried overclocking to the same as the 'Turbo' version of this card - 765/4500. But the thing is, it just doesnt equal to the same performance as the actual turbo version, possibly has something to do with the Turbo version having slightly more voltage.

Also with just overclocking the card, it means that the power management system doesnt downclock the card as far as it would at stock - which means more power and heat (although not much more - but still more).

I agree that it would be dangerous to flash the card - but they ARE the exact same card as far as i can tell, with the Turbo version having an OC'd bios. Even the shrouds on both cards are identical (with the exception of the MW2 sticker on the turbo), the heat sink and fan is also identical on both cards.

If i did manage to flash the card only to find it doesnt work - i could just flash the card again with the original bios which i have already backed up with GPUZ... or at least id imagine i could...?:confused

So could i really brick the card even though they are identical?

    Thanks

Doing any BIOS flashing can render things useless if you get it wrong.

Be careful and take your time, and you SHOULD be ok.

But as said before, just OC'ing the card is the way to go, even the stock 5850 can run any game at decent settings!

    Hi

Thanks for the input thus far.

Sounds like you guys really dont think its a good idea flashing the card...

I actually did something rather foolish yesterday - i was reading up on flashing 5850's using RBE, as i said i made a copy of the cards original bios and decided to play around with it using RBE i altered the clock and mem setting to 765/1125 on clock info 00 (read it was best to leave the rest out), i also altered the fan settings to make it the fan spin 1% more for every degree upto 80c.

I saved the bios (still kept the original), and then opened winflash (big mistake), i loaded the modified bios file and then without realising what it did i clicked program (i didnt actually know that clicking program flashes the card...:eek), Flashing in progress was the message that appeared and my heart sank...

My computer froze and i had to restart - i thought at the time that i was gonna end up with a VERY expensive paperweight, but to my amazement it booted with no issues:). I checked to bois the card was using and strangly - it hadnt changed, it seems the card has some sort of fail-safe that replaces the bios with the original when it detects an unautherised one, thats my conclusion anyway - but not sure if thats the case.

Not sure i want to chance it again though...

So i think i should do what you guys suggested and just stick to OCing, although i cant seem to go that high with this card - the MAX i have been able to get stable is 823/1178, which isnt that bad, but have read that people with these cards have been able to go a lot higher sometimes 900/1200+ so not sure why i cant with my card.:confused

But thanks for all your feedback and recommendations guys - i guess OCing is the best choice even if i cant actually go very high.

    Thanks Again

Ps. If there is anyone out there that has successfuly flashed a HIS 5850 iCooler V then please let me know... thanks.
