Wanted: Video encoder for linux

Hi there everyone, I'm looking for a video encoder for linux after my first real go at ubuntu 6.10. I use alot of videos in different formats including:

Mpg/mpeg
avi
mp4
rm
flv
wmv

Thanks to anyone that can help me with this, I'm not a linux noob, but definately a novice

Look in the Wiki for restricted media formats. It is illegal to download the codecs in the United States, but they are available.

They all play in VLC or Kaffiene on my Kubuntu box.

Not sure why it would be illegal in the US.

Heck even my mac can download the wmv codec legally.

I can think of a legal source for many of those.

 

I allready have codecs instaleld, what I'm looking for is an encoder so that I can encode them to either mpeg or MP4.

There is a royalty or something for MP3. i KNOW you can dl them, but you are not supposed to.

Ok. Ineresting, even Windows Media Player is free and offers the codec. At any rate, I'm not worried about it while its still being kicked aroun in court and there is no clearcut answer.

 

At the moment I'm running Ubuntu 6.10, but I'm thinking of switching over to fedora core 6.
