Wanting to install XP to my old ME desktop machine

My XP notebook recently took one too many spills into it and I think its been vaporized inside (it smells of burnt circuitry and does nothing when tried to start).

Thankfully 2 weeks ago I had backed up the entire 30 GB HD to a 320 GB portable HD.

What I am contemplating is to install the XP system onto my old (unused for years until now) ME desktop, after backing up the ME desktop's 40 GB HD to the 320 GB portable hard drive.

    Info:

My owner's XP disc is SP1.

The XP notebook that fried was a Compaq 2135US.

The ME desktop is a 5008US (5000 Series) Celeron 800MHz with 128KB Integrated L2 Pipeline Burst Cache, Up to 11MB Allocated as Video Memory, 40.0 GB Hard Drive. It now has something like 382 MB of Ram (not too good I think, I think there's room for more, if I can find it...cheap).

What I'm trying to do is to possibly restore my XP notebook system onto the ME chassis, after I update the ME chassis with the XP system.

Just trying to bridge the time until I can pick out a new notebook.

    Is this doable?

    Thanks

    Brian

    Most likely not.

The ME PC is capable of running XP although slowly. But it is a matter of licensing of the XP system.

The XP SP1 disc is from the notebook?

My guess is that if you tried to boot the SP1 Cd in the Compaq desktop it would tell you that it is not the correct machine for that disc and quit right there.

If you tried to just image the notebook HD to the desktop HD then XP would not boot because the hardware is too different.

I don't think there is any way to run XP off the desktop even temporarily with that disc. You could try booting from it but I think it will tell you it is the wrong machine.

There is definitely no way to get your notebook HD to run as before using the desktop PC. Or even when you buy a new notebook. Programs will have to be installed to the new notebook. The best you can hope for is to be able to access personal document, pictures music etc. and copy them to the new OS.

Is the 5008US chassis just not capable to run XP? (I neede to look up XP min requirements).

I am used to slow machines.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Thanks for your input.

As always, as it seems here. I will await a less negative outlook.

    hardware requirements http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sysreqs/home.mspx

I had XP Home running briefly on a 1GHZ with 256MB RAM back in 2001 or 2002.

Your desktop hardware will allow it but as mentioned above, unless your XP Disk is a MS one and not some OEM disk tied to your laptop, that CD will not install to any other hardware but the original laptop.

The XP disc is an MS one. It looks as though the old desktop should handle running XP....Here's the minimum:

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
    CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
    ..............................................................................................

Anything would be better than running ME again. I might try to pick up some more RAM for it if I can find it anywhere, cheap.

I'm just not sure about copying the backed up contents from the XP notebook onto the newly installed XP system on the desktop.
