I just got more RAM so now I have 766 whatevers. I keep getting messages that I need to register my copy of Windows XP because I have new hardware configuration. Someone (my friend Linda in OZ) told me that you have only a certain number of times that you are allowed to use your key number before MicroSoft decides thar you have a bootleg copy. My copy is bought and paid for but Linda says that I will lose the right to the key if I keep re-registering. Now it says that I only have 1 more day to do it and I was planning on reformatting in a few days. Is Linda right or is she pulling my leg?

Hey I told you that I am an idiot! Were you expecting otherwise?

For the person who doesn't laugh at me and answers this question, thank you *blows hershey kisses*

Take it from a burnt out ex-MS tech.

If this is the same machine that you originally activated on, you have unlimited activations.

    There are a couple stipulations.

    1. Activating over the internet is limited. After several activations in a 120 day period, it will deny you. It resets 120 days from the last time it activated.
    2. Does that mean you can't activat? No! It just means you have to call MS to get it activated over the phone.

    Your friend Linda is incorrect.

Thank you Adrynalyne. It didn't seem right that MicroSoft could force me to buy a new cd just because I am an idiot. I can never get that stupid repair console to work because I get stopped right at the beginning and stystem restore just causes me more problems than I had before I had the current problem so I tend to reformat as iot is much easier for me than trying to fix things. My friend Sarah says that my pc gets confused because I delete so much stuff. But I don't need to keep all those files once I am done with them. .(mostly graphics files that take up lots of room). . so I delete. And every couple of months I end up reformatting.

By confused, what does your friend mean? I delete masses of graphic files all the time, mostly high res imaging files that can be in excess of 50mb+ each and my pc doesnt get confused ( maybe I do ;) but thats another story ), if you delete masses of data on a regular basis, then my advice would be to Defrag on a regular basis, use CCleaner to clear any residual junk off your PC, it will also clean the registry and is as safe in that respect as any other registry cleaner.

XP in one respect has the edge over all its predessessors in that it doesnt really need a clean install every so often unlike some of the 9x Win versions, last time i reinstalled XP on this PC was 10/03/2004.

If you've only added RAM, I don't see why you are being promted to re-activate the OS. I've added RAM in numerous machines and never seen this. Are you reloading XP afterwards? What brand of machine is it?
