TORONTO (CP) - A pet food recall has been expanded to include all varieties of its wet dog and cat food, amid concerns that tainted products are still being sold.

The Mississauga, Ont. based Menu Foods is asking retailers to remove all wet food items as a safety precaution, regardless of the date code.

In a weekend release, Menu Foods said that even brands not on the official recall list should be taken off the shelves.

There is no known risk from items not listed on the recall list, but there is concern that consumers may still be able to buy recalled products.

The safety precaution comes days after it was discovered that some of the pet food products Menu Foods manufactured were tainted with rat poison.

Several dogs and cats fell ill or died of kidney failure across North America.

Menu Foods says it will compensate pet owners for any vet bills caused by the tainted food.

There are at least 51 different brand names involved, so if you have a pet, make sure you check the site. This affects Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico

I heard on the news that it was contaminated with rat poison (can't remember the name). How the heck does that get into a mechanized process?

Glad we stick with the dry food for the dogs. We had a couple pouches that we used as a treat now and then, talked to the vet and they said that if we had only given them 1 pouch for the 4 dogs, they should be OK.

I have had enough dog problems for a while. Good thing Fred thinks Dog Chow is good. Thanks for the heads up!

I thinks this is a link to the recalled stuff. Kinda funny some top brand dog foods are made at the same place Ol Roy is made at.

Either that, or they do use rat poison to control the vermin around many of the pet food plants.

The latest news confirms what you guessed Phantom........A load of Chinese wheat meal appears to be the contamination source, and it appears the "Rat Poison" may have been used around the Grain Bins...........Still does not explain how that much managed to get into the Grain Meal thoughconfused

Well, I know from back in my Industrial Chemist days, a lot of pet/animal food plants used to shovel spillages of meat product that fell onto the floor back into the hoppers, to 'save money'. Cross-contamination could easily occur.

The scary thing is, that I've seen pie factories for human consumption, do the same thing. :puke:

The same thing happens with grain. If it's spilt it often just gets shovelled back into the production line.

I'm glad we just give our pets the dry foods. This is such a terrible thing to have happen - and I think Menu foods is in for some heavy litagation.

A lot of people don't know it, but in the food industry - for humans, mind you - there is an "acceptable level of filth" allowed in processed foods. This "filth" includes, but is not limited to I think, rodent hair/droppings/parts, and insect parts/larva. The amount is low, but it's allowed. :puke

Actually, it is fairly diffucult if not impossible to remove ALL foreign matter from our food - especially insect stuff, when dealing with flora - and even in the cleanest and most carefull factories, stuff is gonna "creep" in (pun intended).

The whole shoveling spills back into production thing is, I agree, beyond the pale though! Yuck.

Yep, one reason why I very rarely buy stuff like pies. The low % and low grade of offal parts (ears, snouts, tails, etc.), is bad enough, but that's one industry where I have seen for myself, people shoveling in :crap from the factory floor back into the production line. I guess it's pretty much sterile by the time it's cooked, but I still don't like eating that crud.

Pet food is even more hap-hazard with what goes in, and get's 'recycled'.

Now they are saying the wheat gluten was contaminated with melamine and was only from one supplier. Ya, same as your kitchen cupboards.confused

I heard the same from my local news. I guess it was an Asian supplier who's shipment of wheat gluten was contaminated with melamine like augie said. How does the stuff that is used to make your cabinets get into pet food? They have also added some more brands to the list. So it might be wise for everyone to double check again.

Important to note that the Hill's dry recall only covers two SKUs, both the feline "m/d" prescription diet, sold only through veterinarians.

Well crap, this is growing out of proportions. Figured we were ok with dry food (Iams) we have 2 indoor cats and 1 outdoor. Sounds strange, I know, the one out side was abandoned at a house we first moved into here. She produced litter after litter, 3 in 5 months, thank heaven she only had a couple at a time. We kept one from her first litter. Dan trapped the momma had her spayed and turned her loose back into the yard. When we moved we brought her with us. She took right over, to much so, the one we kept from her she attacks every chance she gets. Well this got out of hand, sorry, was getting at they all eat the same food but noticed Momma has been throwing up a little outside, whew, I'm done rolleyes

PS guess it would be a good ides to call the local vets to see if there has been any problems here, huh?

One of our friends dog got sick, quit eating, took him to the vet, had surgery, something to do with his kidney. I got my info from my man Dan he asks as little as possible. Me, I would have the name of the food, what the surgery entailed etc.

Good Day all, I'm new here, and found this topic dear to my heart.
One thing I found out is the Whiskas cat food wet/dry is safe as I phoned the company and they do not use Menu foods products.
You can usually find the company's 800 number on the can, and phoning them can ease your concerns, and you just might get some free coupons.;)

That is so disgusting Phantom, I love pies!!! Are bakery pies full of filth too??

Genuine home baked pies are generally of a lot better quality if manufactured and baked on their own, relatively small outfit. That said, there is still precious little 'real' meat in them. Bakery pies are definitely a better choice if you can find a good bakery joint. I do buy those ones on occasion.

Yes, I love pies too, but I usually make my own - with a kilo or so of prime diced meat in them. The family pies I make are about 6" thick, and very full of meat and gravy. One slice will do ya, LoL! :drool . On a quasi-note, I occasionally make some awesome apple pies, too. ;)

    Welcome to M.G.'s :)
I would concur with your choice of Wiskas cat food, there. My cat is pretty fussy (spoilt?), and has done very well on a diet of mainly Whiskas, and the quality is pretty good. (Yep, I checked up on them, too. ;) ).

I have a feeling that they do not know where all the contaminated product went and now the FDA is tracking it, so might be more added. Was talking to the vet about it this morning, she agrees.
