Hey guys, i used your forum this weekend to do a little project that i just failed completely at. Im a OTR truck driver and when i have some spare time i have my laptop to keep me company. its a compaq armada m700, 700mhz, 12G HDD and maxxed out in memory running XP, not a game'r but more of a surf'er. I decided to do the solid state hard drive upgrade thats all the rage now since this thing gets tossed all around the truck, well, not exactly. my SSHDD consisted of a compact flash card with the smaller IDE connector that connects were the spinner goes. I wasted a whole weekend doing this to get some horrible results. heres how the battle went:

could not ghost the spinner onto the card because there were some system restore files that were fragmented, even tried to fragment just those files with no luck. everytime they were "accessed" the spinner went into this like self test mode thingy were it stopped TX/RX-ing and it would make 4 clicks and time out.. unno.. dont ask. so that killed that idea.

the copy of XP i have is a upgrade, not fresh install. so i inserted the card into lappy and began to load 98 onto it. 98 ran perfectly fine. awsome, so i thought. started the xp install. got all to way to the first start up and when it got to the splash screen, BSOD!!!! UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. ok, fix that with fixboot, next start up: NTLDR is missing, damit. copy blah blah blah ntldr to... from... ok. startup: nothing.

being one pissed of white guy i go and buy brand new: XP SP2 fresh install. i stick the card in the pc and it stated that it was blank and in RAW file form. no problem, format it as NTFS. ok now, stick the card back into lappy and prepared to do a fresh install. got to the format option. Partition1 [unknown]. what the hell i just formatted it as NTFS?? owell, proceed with the format. nothing. chkdsk = to many errors or something along that line.

now heres were it gets really really weird. i replaced my pc's spinner with the card and install XP on it. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. installed. ran. batta boom batta bing. now my great idea was to then put it into lappy and deal with all the "found new hardware" bubbles considering it was in a different machine. inserted the card back into lappy. started it up. got to the splash screen and kept restarting. I hit F8 to try to get it to boot into safe mode. click on safe mode and it gets to mup.sys and restarts..... and now i give up...

so im hopeing that someone can just tell me what im doing wrong...

If you have an Ultimate boot cd you could try using MHDD to fix any bad sectors on your current hdd. Maybe that's why you couldn't defrag those restore files, maybe the sectors are bad that those files just happen to be on. It's not much help but at least it's a start.

You can find a download for UBCD here http://www.mrbass.org/ubcd/ just download, unzip, and burn to a disk using nero or another burning software that allows you to burn .iso images.
