Wave Volume Muting After MS Update

Not getting any phantom sounds, redirects, or pop-ups. Regularly run SuperSpyware, MSE, Kapersky TDSS Killer, and Malwarebytes. Downloaded Combofix and TrojanRemover to double check, and all seems good. Quickly connects to my MSN homepage and other sites, and email loads fast.

The problem started after MS decided to send a security update late last week even though I'm still running 32 Bit XP Pro (SP3). I contacted MS support, but was told by numerous reps that no update was sent due to me running XP. It was. MS off-shore support isn't very supportive.

Wave slider returns to lowest position within a minute or two of being increased to max level. Sound will mute leaving slider in place, but returns upon clicking slider. I've read alot about the issue, but most seem to indicate the presence of an iexplorer.exe-related infecttion or a bootkit/rootkit issue. Not sure that's my problem as nothing is showing in various in-depth scans or in the task manager, but I'm not very tech savvy.

I've seen mention of registry issues, but I'm not comfortable messing with the registry without guidance, so I registered here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark
