    Hey guys,

Recently, I've been experiencing a system slow down. I had 46 processes running!

I went to black viper, and turned off what he said.

    I now have 43 - woohoo! Lol.

Here's a big problem of mine.

I have Nortons Internet Security, Antivirus, and Systemworks.

I ALWAYS have them running, and always wantNAV and NIS running. But in Taskmanager, theres like 6 different Nortons Processes, and I don't know which to leave on, or which to take off.

    I have the following:
    -------------------------
    NPROTECT.exe
    navapsvc.exe
    ccSetMgr
    ccProxy
    EM_EXEC.EXE
    ccAPP.exe
    --------------------------

All I want to work is Nortons Anti Virus (Autoprotect), Nortons Internet Security, and Live Update. Is there anything else on that list that I can STOP from running?

Also, I have these, and have NO CLUE what they are:
    ---------------------------
    MsOMSPSV.exe
    NSMdtr.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    symlcsvc
    mdm.exe
    gearsec.exe
    CTSVCCDA.exe
    ati2evxx
    ctfmon
    SPBBCSvc
    SNDSrvc
    ------------------------

Am I allowed to disable any of those?

And one last question ;). I have VB.NET because I work with it in school. Under services.msc, there is something about a Visual Basic Debugger, and it's always running. Is this something that I can turn off? Or will it screw up the program?

So for this services overload on you guys. It's just getting REALLY annoying :(.

    Thank you in advance!

    Jnick

    jnick,

The ones below are all Norton's and if I am correct they would not suggest disabling any of them.

    NSMdtr.exe
    symlcsvc
    SPBBCSvc.exe
    SNDSrvc.exe
    ccAPP.exe (Norton AntiVirus 2003)
    ccProxy
    ccSetMgr
    navapsvc.exe
    NPROTECT.exe

Here are some of the others:

    wdfmgr.exe Windows Media Player 10

    gearsec.exe DVDXcopy

mdm.exe Is associated with Microsoft Windows process debugging system. It allows the user to debug Internet Explorer errors by using a script interface tool.

ctsvccda.exe this process was authored by Creative Labs, and is usually installed alongside Soundblaster card drivers or some Creative Labs applications.

ati2evxx.exe is the ATI External Event Utility for your ATI display drivers. It manages the ATI Hotkey feature. This process can be removed to free up resources.

ctfmon.exe is a part of the Microsoft Office suite. It activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office XP Language Bar. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

em_exec.exe is installed alongside Logitech MouseWare. Gives fast access via the desktop tray to Logitech's configuration utility. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for ease of use.

Hope this helps at least explain some of them. Maybe some of the other members might suggest what you can disable / remove.

I don't usually knock programs or products that people have paid for, but I have to agree with ASUS here.

I did not know really until this thread just how many processes that Norton's keeps or requires running and I am not sure that is all of them.

I would seriously consider the advice in the link ASUS furnished you, especially if your subscription is close to running out.

I agree with the other posts. I wouldn't have anything by Norton on my pc or ever nearby LOL.

That aside, you still have way too may processes going on. I only have 24 on Win 2K, and not a one of those you list.

Reading many posts here on MG, I have never seen a low number of processes for XP (<40). It would seem to me that XP needs around twice as many processes running compared to all OS's up to XP. My W98SE has around 20-24 running, similar to W2K I guess. XP experts please step in. Bazza

I'm no XPExpert, but you don't have to have that many processes running, I stay under 30 quite easily, I just leave the necessary processes for XP running and a few others specific to my hardware, like 1 for my vidcard, 1 for my logitech mouse, and 1 for my soundcard, stuff like pestpatrol when Im browsing with firefox(otherwise I shut it off).
There's some helpfull registry tweaks that will unload dll's not in use, just do your research so you don't disable anything that's necessary, I found this thread while googling for info on: wdfmgr.exe, as it suddenly was in my processes and it hasn't been there before, the reason being I don't usually use wmp, but used last night. I'm trying to move over to opensource alternatives that aren't all bloatware. Currently vlc for my video-media has been good, and foobar2000 for music files, I may eventually move over to linux, but as it stands, XP is just easier and more compatable with some specific things. Best of luck on your endeavors to knock down the numbers of processes being run, it can be minimized relatively easily on XP.

Some cool free programs can be found here
Specificly, process explorer is helpful as it is like your task manager for xp, but shows many more specific details about each process, an example of my processes are here
