I don't know what thread to jump into, but I searched for 'external hard drive' and got this.

    My questions are:
    1. can I disconnect my W.D. 500G external hard drive when it's not in use?
    2. can malware find its way over to the drive letter on which my EHDD is installed?

    Thank you.

    Hi

Moved your post to its own thread.

    To answer your questions....

    1. Yes its not a problem, i disconnect mine, just use the USB Eject icon in the system tray (next to clock) so that you get no corruption of data if unplugged before any transfers are finished.
    2. Yes malware can hide on your external, so wise to keep your Windows version and all security applications upto date.
