I have formatted a wd hard drive with their formatting tool for DOS. I cannot install Vista, it keeps on freezing. Any ideas?

Download the latest Gparted iso and burn it with Imgburn or any other software that will let you burn images. Then boot the CD, delete any partitions on the disk and repartition with NTFS as the file system, Then boot with the Vista install CD. Just make sure you have the correct hard drive selected in Gparted as the naming convention is different.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

There is no reason to format the hdd to get vista on it. You will have to delete the partition, then just install vista. Though, I'm surprised, that you couldn't get vista to delete the partition for you.

I used GParted to partition. I am still not able to load Vista, the computer says it has a corrupted system file. Is there a way to save this HDD?

When you used Gparted did you "Delete any partitions on the disk and repartition with NTFS as the file system".

So, you started with no existing partitions, created a new one, formatted it to NTFS. Then booted to the Vista disk and tried to install. When did you get the corrupt system file error--during installation or after?

It had a corrupted system file originally, so I tried a low level format to start over. Yes, I started over with no new partitions.

So what happened during the install? It booted from Vista disc, copied the files to run the installation, asked where you want to install then what?

Due to the corrupted windows file, Vista was halted from booting. It would go no further.
