web browser doesn't work

Ok, here is the problem: I can connect to the Internet through compuserve. Running win ME OS. I had to update explorer to 6.01 something plus SP1 to get it to work. No problem there. After a few weeks my browser stopped working. I can still get email. I can download updates to Norton AV. However, when initiating explorer the screen reads it can not connnect. It starts with opening page, then the error message. Settings are fine. I can not do an IPCONFIG using run from the start menu. The screen pops up for a nanosecond then disappears. Trying to get to windows update tells me that a search can not be preformed and then the error message. I suspect a virus or spyware.

I have run Adaware SE with updated definitions. I have run the latest stinger. My Norton AV appears to be fine.

Any ideas what the problem could be?
