I've tried searching for consumer reports but the Internet is absolutely flooded with fake camparison web sites for web hosts, as I guess you'd expect! Basically I'm self employed and have a small service-based business (comp repairs). My current host - justhost.com - were okay but the price is about to double for renewal, from $50 for my first year to $110 for the coming year, and I had a few niggles with their software. I know a little HTML and CSS but I really would prefer to customize a template or use a wizard than to do it all with Dreamweaver.

So can anyone recommend a good, cheap web host with decent templates or wizards?

    Greetings, 94dgrif.

We use Doteasy for most of our websites:

In 5+ years, never a problem, and you can't beat the price. ;)

I appreciate the responses guys. Unfortunately last night I ran out of time and had to pick one myself. I went with Inmotion, which are cheap ($3 a month, though admittedly not as cheap as free!), but don't include any website builders at the cheapest level. That isn't of course what the online rep told me while in chat, but that's another story!

Awe: Justhost had a special introductory offer when i first signed up, plus I believe they included the domain registration for free. I expected the price would go up for the second year, but I was anticipating a 50% increase not 100%! Currently the cheapest option I can renew at is $8.95 a month, and yet the cheapest that others can begin subscription at is $4.45!

The whole things has been such a pain though. Apparently the ICANN (organization that manage domain names) prevent a domain from being transfered to different hosts within 60 days of initial purchase, or 14 days from expiration. The latter is what effected me, and I suspect many others that only chose to switch hosts as their renewal date came looming. I'll save you all the saga of events, but in short these are the correct steps that others shsould take:
    1. Cancel automatic renewal with your old host
    2. Select and purchase a subscription with your new host
    3. If the domain is within 14 days of expiring, renew the domain with the old host, otherwise renew it with your new host
    4. Backup your website to disc
    5. Restore your website to the new host
    6. Request the EPP autherization key from your old host, and email it to your new host
    7. Change the DNS forwarding of the old host's site controls to point to the DNS addresses of the new host (tech support can do this for you if needs be!)

My site was originally built with 'Website Builder' from the old host. When I uploaded it to the new host and visited it from their temporary address (ie not my domain) it didn't work. I had pop-ups announcing that I was using a website built from Website Builder for a different license, and there was a large banner denouncing me at the top of the screen. Ultimately it turned out that the code that did all this checked the domain name, and not the domain host address. In otherwords once the new host had control of my domain and I could visit my website by typing in the domain address, the messages all went away. Sucks for editting, but ultimately came to nought.

It is always the best option to register domain at domain registrar like godaddy, name.com, namecheap.com ... and from hosting company buy just hosting. That way you have full control of your domain all the time, you can avoid many potential problems.

And for building sites, CMS is better option than site builder. There are many simple CMSs that are easy to learn.

I am of a similar opinion, it is better to register you domain with a domain registrar and host your website with ixwebhosting for example. That way you have full control. I would also advice to rather go with VPS rather than shared hosting. But that’s a matter of opinion.

For my info (and I apologize for the very brief hijack): please fill me in about the difference between a free site's Domain Registration Purchase and a 'register you domain with a domain registrar'.
