    just got a cheap web cam to keep the grandchildren happy I'm thinking of useing it as a security camera, is there a way i can record from it

    Yes.

    Did it come with any kind of software? All the ones I've ever used do come with software and all have recording functionality. My logitech one even had an option to record only when it detected movement.

    Otherwise I'm sure there are free software out there that can do it too.
