I think it comes to this....

Just starting out and need a little hand holding? Frontpage...

Want more control over things?? Macromedia Dreamweaver.

There are many more out there but those are the two I know...
Haven't used Frontpage in a while but it was very nice to get going..

I agree with all of the above:
A lot depends on your skill level, and Front Page is useable for new webmasters; but, it's not cheap anymore. When I started I used the free composer that came with the Netscape download. It wouldn't do frames or anything, but the WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) interface was easy to learn. I believe the current Netscape download still has that feature.

If you have a copy of and office program, very often you can create a web page with the document editor, and when you save ... you may have the option to save as html.

If you're looking for a free HTML editor, then ACE html has a free download at http://freeware.acehtml.com/, but it's more for those who understand the coding behind html.

Personally I like Dreamweaver ($$$) about the best, although I still use FP and Netscape at times.

I also agree, Dreamweaver works very well and DreamweaverMX is even better.

Personally I like to type out all the code myself, it may take longer but I just like doing that more. I use Edit pad Lite and use some ftp thing to load it up. It just to depends on what you want I have used FrontPage and it is nice but just like doing it all myself. It just depends on what you know and what you want to do. ;)

I like Edit Plus 2 or Primal Script myself. I prefer to hand code primarily because the WYSIWYG editors don't "know" advanced programming techniques (at least none that I'm aware of ) like interleaving. I like apps that allow to me drop a control on the page so I can fill in the rest and that's about it.

I have to agree with pretty much everyone. I first used FP, till I realized that I wanted more control. So I learned HTML and used notepad. If I get stuck on something, or I want to spice it up a bit, I'll fire up Dreamweaver MX and go at it.

imho Frontpage is the nastiest editor of the lot. It adds a lot of crap to the page so if you come back to it havint learnt HTML it makes little sense and you need to "fix" various things, like if you want to add a script. Dreamweaver is a lot better, although i prefer UltraDev to MX. Flash is a different matter altogether really....

If you plan to do serious work on webpages at any time in the future you really need to learn how to type html. It really is a very simple scripting language. No matter what editor you chose they will always make extra code and make a mess of it. It's just the way they are. If you want clean neat code, or espicially code that validates the only way is to write it out yourself. But the biggest thing is if you plan to do anything more then a simple website those programs won't work for you. Besides from pieces here and there. Most websites use some form of cgi nowadays, PHP, PERL, ASP. In order to use those you will have to understand how to code html yourself.

All in all what i'm trying to say is if you have any plans of building a site past a simple page you should justtake the time to learn html. Trying to learn off of the code Dreamweaver, frontpage or any other program spits out will confuse you as they do all sorts of things that they shouldn't be doing and also use a lot of outdated tags which means once xhtml finally becomes more standerdized new web browsers won't even view the page correctly since many of the tags they use are depricated which means newer browsers won't even support them.
